Tonight the Sabres looked awful in the first period early, but turned it around completely for a really good 5-3 win at home against the Flyers, extending their win streak to four in a row, the first in the Jarmo Kekäläinen era.
Big organizational move this week for the Sabres this week, FINALLY firing Kevyn Adams and hiring Jarmo Kekäläinen to be the new GM. Although I still am skeptical in them because Terry Pegula’s the worst owner in the league, I do like that move, and apparently Terry said that Kekäläinen will have full control of all hockey operations. Jarmo built that Blue Jackets team that swept the best regular season team ever (at that point) in Tampa, so I have hope he could turn this shit bag organization into something. We’ll see.
After a pretty boring start to this game, the Sabres got on the board first 7:40 into it as Jack Quinn redirected a shot from the point by Samuelsson into the back of the net. The Flyers tied it right up less than a minute later though with a nicely placed one timer in the slot, setup by a beautiful backhand pass by Bobby Brink through three Sabres. The Flyers dominated that period, outshooting the Sabres 12-4. Buffalo was lucky to get out of that first 20 minutes tied.
The Flyers took their first lead off the game 11:01 into the second period with a perfect pass by Trevor Zegras setting up a quick one timer for Cam York to make it 2-1 Philly. The Sabres tied it up with 3:06 left to go in the second on an absolute beautiful play. Tage Thompson forced a turnover on the wall, Dahlin got the puck, had a pretty between the legs drop pass to Tage, who sniped the puck off the post and in. Insane goal. The Sabres took the lead back on a quick shot by Noah Ostlund with 29.8 seconds left on a nicely placed shot from up in the top of the zone. Huge. I thought we looked way better in that period.
The Sabres added to their lead with 9:40 left in regulation with Josh Norris making it 4-2 getting the puck wide open in front of the power play after Buffalo almost turned it over. With 5:32 left in regulation, Travis Konecny beat Lyon on a shot he likely should’ve saved to get Philly back within one. Ryan McLeod capped off the win with an empty netter with 7.9 seconds left to finish off a nice penalty kill to get us our first four game win streak of the season.
FINAL: Sabres 5, Flyers 3
I thought the Sabres sucked in the first period of this game, but they really turned it around and played great on both ends of the ice to finish off what became a really good game. Nice to get the first four game win streak of the season for the first game in the Jarmo era of the Buffalo Sabres.
