In a matinee in Columbus, the Sabres had their ten game winning streak come to an end with a lousy game, losing 5-1 to the Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets opened the scoring exactly three minutes into the game on a deflected puck that ended up in the top left corner past UPL by Denton Mateychuk off a drop pass from Boone Jenner. The Sabres tied it up with 8:34 left in the first period, with Josh Norris coming out of the box, setting up Josh Doan for a tap in through the crease to tie it 1-1, after a great play to keep the puck in the zone by Owen Power. Columbus to their lead back, shorthanded with 5:56 left in the first, with Brendan Gaunce getting on a breakaway and beating Luukkonen. The Jackets took a two goal lead with 2:48 to go in the first, with Dmitiri Voronkov tipping a shot from the point by Ivan Provorov through the five hole on UPL by as it just squeezed past him to make it a 3-1 game. The Sabres have been real sloppy through this first period.

Matthieu Olivier made it 4-1 Blue Jackets, sliding the bouncing puck five hole again on UPL with 11:56 on a quick play in transition after the Sabres had a nice chance on the other side of the ice. The Sabres once again had some decent chances in the second, but still got left off the board and now have quite the three hole goal to dig out of in the third.

Cole Sillinger scored on the empty net with 8:14 left in the game with Lindy pulling UPL for the “power play” with coinciding penalties, pretty much ending the game as Columbus made it 5-1. I didn’t completely hate that move, but game’s over there.

Lousy game on the road to end the ten game win streak with the first loss in the Jarmo era. We played poorly today on both ends of the ice, especially defensively, as I though we generated some decent chances and couldn’t puck the puck on net. UPL was pretty bad in goal, giving up a few softies, and that ends the run.

Gotta bounce back at home against the Canucks on Tuesday.
