Lousy Sunday for me on the NHL yesterday, going 5-10 to lose 4.82 units. Brutal after this solid run for the last couple weeks. Let’s bounce back on tonight’s kind of lousy five game slate!
Rangers vs. Mammoth (7:00)
Pretty lousy cross conference game to start the night. The Rangers stink, especially at home, with a 5-10-3 record at MSG. They ended a three game losing streak, winning the Winter Classic 5-1 in Miami on Friday night, improving to a still terrible 20-18-5 on the season. The defense and goaltending for the Rags has been very good, but their offense is awful. Utah’s been okay on both ends of the ice, but haven’t been great. They’re 19-20-3 on the season with just one win in their last four games, coming off a 4-1 loss in Jersey on Saturday. In the first game between these teams in Utah, the Mammoth won 3-2 at home in November. I’d lean they win again here but I’m not touching the side on this game. I do like the under, which I’ll take for half a unit. I wanted to bet Panarin to get a point, but the price is too expensive to bet it straight up, there’s no one else I want to parlay it with and I don’t like the over 1.5, so I’ll just stick with the under in this one.
Capitals vs. Ducks (7:00)
This should be a pretty fun cross conference game. The Capitals are struggling right now, with just three wins in their last twelve games, falling to 21-15-6 on the season, coming off a 3-2 shootout loss at home to the lowly Blackhawks on Saturday. The Ducks are struggling a ton too after their hot start to the season, on a five game losing streak, coming off a 5-2 loss at home to the Wild on Friday, with just two wins in their last eleven games to drop to 21-17-3 on the year. They are still holding a playoff spot though in the weak Pacific Division. The first game between these teams a month ago went to a shootout with the Ducks winning 4-3 at home. I like the Caps to answer back here, with a much better defense and I’ll take them at home for half a unit. I like the over as well, which I’ll also take for half a unit.
Senators vs. Red Wings (7:30)
I wouldn’t say this is a great game in the Atlantic Division, but with how tight of a division that this has been so far this year, I’d expect this to be a pretty good game. The Senators after a three game losing streak have bounced back with wins in their last two games, improving to 20-15-5 on the season, coming off a 4-2 win at home on Saturday against the Jets. Their offense has been good, but they’ve struggled on the back end. The Red Wings are a point behind Tampa for first place in the division coming off losses in a home and home against Pittsburgh, losing 4-1 on Saturday at home (triple loser for me). Statistically they haven’t been great on either end of the ice this year. I’d lean Detroit wins here on the road, but not enough to bet them. The total at 6.5 is a toss up to me, so I’ll stay off that too. I will parlay Tim Stutzle, Lucas Raymond, and Brady Tkachuk to each get a point for half a unit, and I’ll take Raymond individually to get a point for half a unit.
Flames vs. Kraken (9:30)
Kind of a boring game out West, although both of these teams have played quite well lately. The Flames are coming off a 4-3 loss at home to the Predators on Saturday, ending a three game win streak, but with a 13-6-1 record in their last 20 games, they’ve turned their horrible start around, improving to 18-19-4 on the year. The Kraken looked horrendous, going on a stretch of just one win in eleven games, but they’ve looked great lately, with a 6-0-1 record in their last seven to improve to 18-14-7 on the year. Calgary won the first game between these teams 4-2 at home a couple weeks ago. I’d lean they win again here at home, but not enough to bet them. I do like the under in this game though quite a bit, with two terrible offenses, but pretty good defenses, and I’ll take it for a unit.
Kings vs. Wild (10:30)
Pretty big mismatch in my eyes here out West to end the night for their second game in the last three days, with the Kings pulling off the upset to win 5-4 in a shootout at home, answering back from a 4-3 shootout win by the Wild at home in the first week of the season. The Kings have been good defensively, but they’ve really struggled offensively. Saturday’s win against Minnesota was just their third win in their last eleven games, coming into tonight with a 17-14-9 record. The Wild have been fantastic, right in the tier below the Avalanche (along with the Stars) at the top of the league. They’ve been very good on both ends of the ice. Coming into tonight, Minnesota is on a six game point streak, losing in regulation just once in their last 14 games, with a 25-10-9 record on the season. I like the Wild to answer back here on the road and I’ll take them for 1.5 units. I’d lean the over at 5.5, but not enough to bet it. I’m also going to go with two player props here, with a unit on Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov to each get a point, and another half unit parlay adding Quinn Hughes to that.
