Tonight the Sabres played really well on the road, beating the Rangers for a 5-2 win in MSG for our twelfth win in our last 13 games!
The Sabres got on the board first on a great play in the slot, weaving through the slot and chasing his own rebound to setup Josh Doan for the first goal of the game, 4:06 into the period. Pretty bad defensive play by the Rags, not being able to get the puck to lead to that goal. Solid first period for Buffalo.
Buffalo took a 2-0 lead 6:58 into the second period, with some great moves by Bowen Byram going blue line to blue line and entering the zone, setting up Alex Tuch for a hell of a rip past Quick. Immediately after, the Sabres went to the power play on a unsportsmanlike penalty that we got lucky to get, since the ref didn’t call the penalty until after the goal was scored (which should have wiped out the penalty). The Sabres had plenty of nice looks on it, but couldn’t score. The Rangers scored a few minutes later, entering the zone on a four on two, with Artemi Panarin setting up Mika Zibanejad to make it 2-1 with 10:26 to go in the second period. Gotta answer back. With 7:26 left in the second, Jason Zucker redirected a bomb from the blue line from Rasmus Dahlin and the puck bounced it over Jonathan Quick to re-establish the Sabres two goal lead and make it 3-1. Fun period!
The Rangers got back within one just 51 seconds into the third period, as Vinny Trocheck made it 3-2. With less than six minutes left, Peyton Krebs took a bad high sticking four minute penalty, but just seconds later, Mattias Samuelsson went flying down the ice, and from such a low angle ripped it past Quick for a huge goal with 5:21 to go to give the Sabres a 4-2 lead and that much need cushion. The Sabres killed off the full four minutes and as it expired, Ryan McLeod chased down the puck that would’ve been icing if the Sabres weren’t short handed and buried the empty netter to give us the 5-2 win.
FINAL: Sabres 5, Rangers 2
Great win tonight on the road for the Sabres. It got a bit dicey there late in the third when Krebs took the penalty, but what a goal for Samuelsson to seal off this win. We’re playing great right now, on both ends of the ice and tonight was a solid game all around. Colton Ellis made his first start in goal in a while and made some big saves when he had to.
Big win! Let’s keep rolling!
