Sabres @ Islanders: 1/24/26 – Game Reactions/Recap

Today in a matinee on Long Island, the Sabres picked up another big win, with Alex Lyon shutting out the Islanders 5-0 on the road.

Pretty sloppy start for both of these teams today, with neither team scoring in the first period. Alex Lyon made a great save in the closing second of the first, and we head into the second period tied up at 0-0.

The Sabres got on the board early in the second with a nice goal 32 seconds into the period, with Ryan McLeod setting up Jack Quinn for a shot in the slot on a one timer, and Jason Zucker coming around the back of the net to tap home the rebound and put Buffalo up 1-0. With 11.4 seconds left in the period, Zach Benson was in transition with Tage Thompson, and on a beautiful play Benson went behind the net and instead of wrapping it around, he just dropped it back the same side he came from to setup Tage with a tip in as he was trailing to put the Sabres up 2-0. Huge goal to head into the intermission. Lyon made some huge saves in that period, but I thought the Isles were the better team, getting way better chances, but it’s Buffalo with the lead after 40 minutes.

Buffalo started the third period even quicker, with Jason Zucker sliding the puck far side from the side of the net past Rittich to put the Sabres up 3-0 just five seconds in. The Isles pulled the goalie early, and with 5:58 left in the game, Rasmus Dahlin shot it from the corner the entire length of the ice into the empty net to completely ice off the game, making it 4-0. 36 seconds later, Alex Tuch redirected a shot from the point by Samuelsson, adding another one to the lead and getting Michael Kesselring his first point as a Sabre on the secondary assist. The Sabres held off the Isles late, and Alex Lyon picked up the sixth shutout of his NHL career.

FINAL: Sabres 5, Islanders 0

Solid win for the Sabres on the road. It wasn’t the cleanest game, but the offense jumped on some big chances early in the second and third periods, and Alex Lyon was great in goal with a 27 save shutout to get us the win and another huge two points in the standings.
