Sabres vs. Canadiens: 1/31/26 – Game Reactions/Recap

Tonight the Sabres took a 4-2 loss at home in a key game against the Canadiens, in a very fast paced, fun game to watch.

After a fast start on both ends of the ice for both teams, the Habs got on the board first, 8:40 into the game on the power play, with Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki doing some work down low, setting up Juraj Slafkovsky to put Montreal up 1-0. Even though we’re down going into the intermission, really fun first period to watch. Just gotta get on the board and stay out of the box.

The Sabres killed off a penalty to start the second period, and 7:36 into the second period, Owen Power tied up the the game, getting in a nice open spot at the top of the circle as Tage Thompson set him up for a quick shot to tie up the game (and cash my parlay on Tage, Caufield, and Suzuki to each get a point early)! Noah Ostlund gave the Sabres the lead, with Alex Tuch getting the rebound down low behind the net, wheeling around and setting up Ostlund for the one timer in the slot to put Buffalo up 2-1. Very good second period, grinding it out and getting the lead, while keeping the puck out of their own net.

Cole Caufield tied up the game again 4:14 into the third period, redirecting the puck down low in the slot past Lyon to even it up for the Canadiens. Caufield scored again, giving Montreal a 3-2 lead with 9:47 left in regulation, setup by a nice play in the corner from Kirby Dach, getting it to Suzuki down low for a quick pass and shot on the open half of the net by Caufield to finish it off. With 47.1 seconds left, the Habs hit the empty net from Nick Suzuki all the way down the ice for Montreal to win 4-2. Lousy third period to lose this one.

FINAL: Sabres 2, Canadiens 4

Really fun game to watch even though it wasn’t the result we wanted. Despite the loss, I thought we played pretty good tonight. We outshot the Habs 39-31 and out-chanced them 31-19, yet couldn’t score in the first or third period. This was going to be a tough game, and it was. The Sabres played hard to keep up with the Canadiens, but it just wasn’t enough as we split the season series and Montreal takes third place in the Atlantic, dropping us back into a Wild Card spot.

Gotta bounce back against Florida on Monday night down in Lauderdale.
