With a dominant second period, tonight the Sabres went to Pittsburgh and avoided the season sweep by the Penguins with a huge 5-1 win to make it five wins in a row!
The Sabres got the first goal of the game, 12 minutes in as Ryan McLeod went in on. breakaway, shorthanded and deking out Silovs for a beautiful goal, sliding it five hole to put Buffalo up 1-0. Bryan Rust tied it up with a shorty for the Pens with 5:12 to go in the first, going right through Norris, around UPL and putting it in the back of the open net. Another beautiful goal. That move reminded me of the Pominville goal in 2006 against Ottawa. Not the best first period.
Josh Norris got the Sabres the lead back, making it 2-1 on the power play after Malkin got ejected, going to the net and chasing a Byram rebound. With a delayed penalty making it 6 on 4, Alex Tuch tipped in a shot 6:18 into the second from Owen Power up top to make it 3-1 Buffalo. Owen Power got another one for himself, getting to the circle and getting set up on a beautiful cross ice pass from Norris to make it 4-1 with 9:30 left in the first. Really great second period for the Sabres with us completely taking over this game.
With 3:07 left in the game, Mattias Samuelsson sent the puck all the way down the ice into the empty net to finish off the game, making it 5-1.
FINAL: Sabres 5, Penguins 1
Five wins in a row! Huge second period to get us the win in a dominant effort. Let’s keep rolling into the playoffs!
