This afternoon the Sabres kept their winning road trip rolling, with a big third period to beat the Kings 4-1 in LA, tying the Canes again at the top of the Eastern Conference.
The Kings got on the board first, on the power play, with Artemi Panarin cashing in on a beautiful no look pass by Anze Kopitar with 9:12 left in the first period. Not much UPL could do on that one. Not an awful period, and it was pretty fun with both teams getting some solid scoring chances, but with the garbage penalty call on Quinn, that led to us being down 1-0 after one.
Tage Thompson tied it up for the Sabres 4:05 into the second period, driving to the net, deking around Forsberg and putting it in the back of the net with a beautiful finish, also cashing my parlay on him, Panarin and Kempe to each get a point. Decent period, with the Sabres penalty kill pretty active and Tage tying it up. Gotta stay out of the box and get this win.
With 8:38 left in the first period, Sam Carrick with a nice individual effort, took the puck from the wall to the net and put the backhand on the far inside post to give the Sabres their first lead of the game, making it a 2-1 game. LA challenged it for a missed stoppage of a high stick, but it worked out for us, with the goal counting and sending us to the power play. Jason Zucker capitalized on that power play, putting Buffalo up 3-1 cleaning up the trash in front, and tipping it five hole past Forsberg with 7:49 left in regulation. Zach Benson sealed off the game with an empty netter with 2:25 to go, making it 4-1 and likely ending the game.
FINAL: Sabres 4, Kings 1
Slow start again today, but solid game. The offense got rolling in the third period and in general I thought we played well. Both special teams were good, and at 5 on 5, we didn’t give up a goal with some big saves by UPL. Let’s keep it going tomorrow in Anaheim. Back to tied for first place in the East with Carolina.
