Tonight the Sabres weren’t great defensively, but took the loser point in a 4-3 overtime loss at home to the Bruins for our second loss in a row.
The Bruins got on the board first with 8:53 left in the first period, with young stud Fraser Mitten setting up a nice pass and the Sabres defense letting David Pastrnak get open in the slot for a quick one timer to make it 1-0 Boston. The Sabres answered back on the power play with a beautiful backhand pass from Tage Thompson to Jason Zucker for a one timer to knot it up a 1-1 with 4:42 to go in the first, cashing my Pasta/Tage parlay early. That first period started slow for the Sabres and we looked like shit early but it got much better as it went on.
Boston took the lead back with 10:15 left in the second period, with David Pastrnak stealing the puck after a clear and the walking in, deking out UPL, missing the net, and then Viktor Arvidsson cashing in on the rebound to put the Bruins up 2-1. Wasn’t a great period there for us.
The Sabres tied it up 5:21 into the second period, with Zach Benson stealing the puck on the boards in the neutral zone and then crashing the net and putting the puck past Korpisalo as he got pushed into him. On the power play after that, 33 seconds later, the Sabres took the lead with Tage coming around the net and dishing it to Zucker in front to make it 3-2 Buffalo and give us our first lead of the game. Perfect vision from Tage to set that up. Former Sabre Casey Mittlestadt tied it up with UPL out of position after a missed shot went off the boards, leaving Mittlestadt wide open with the empty net in front of him to tie it. Horrible goal to give up. Onto overtime.
The Bruins ended it quick, just 38 seconds into overtime, with Pavel Zacha getting a step back the Sabres defense with David Pastrnak pulling all three Sabres to him on the zone entry, leaving Zacha open to fire it five hole to win.
FINAL: Sabres 3, Bruins 2
The better team won tonight, I didn’t think we played great. UPL wasn’t great, we were bad in the neutral zone with giving up odd man rushes, and defensively we just didn’t look good. Huge to at least get the loser point to tie it up with the Canes for first place in the East and get another point ahead of Tampa in the Atlantic. Gotta bounce back on Friday.
