Yesterday on a one game slate, I got a nice win on the over on that late west coast North division game. Today, since the NHL can’t stay out of their own way in scheduling, we have a HUGE slate with most of the league on the ice.
Sabres vs. Rangers (7:00)
The Sabres got a win a few nights ago in a shootout against the Caps. I don’t think they’re a good team, but they’ve been scoring goals this year. The Rangers have been pretty disappointing even though I think they’re a good team, starting the season 1-3-1. I’d lean the Rangers here but I’m not touching this game.
Bruins vs. Penguins (7:00)
The Bruins and the Pens have both started the year pretty well and are both pretty good teams in the East. I think this game could go either way. Pittsburgh’s gone over in 5 of their 6 games this year where Boston has gone over in only two of their five, both to the Flyers. I’m not betting this game.
Devils vs. Flyers (7:00)
The Flyers should be the way better team in this matchup but the Devils haven’t had a bad start to the year. They’re 3-1-1 and overachieving. If Carter Hart was in net I’d be on the Flyers here but with Brain Elliot confirmed in net already, I’ll lay off this game.
Capitals vs. Islanders (7:00)
Both of these teams are good. The Caps still haven’t gotten back their four Russian leaders, out due to violations of COVID policies. I’d slightly lean the Islanders here if Varlamov starts in net, but not enough to bet it without seeing how these teams match up this year as Isles coach Barry Trotz goes back to Washington where he won the Cup.
Blue Jackets vs. Panthers (7:00)
Florida’s only played two games so far this year since they’ve been screwed with matchups getting cancelled against Dallas and Carolina due to COVID problems. Both games were high scoring wins against the shitty Blackhawks. The Blue Jackets haven’t had a great start but just made a blockbuster trade shipping out Pierre-Luc Dubois for Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic, both who haven’t joined their new team. I’d probably lean the over here but not enough to bet it.
Predators vs. Blackhawks (8:00)
The Blackhawks stink. They have bad goaltending and bad defense. Chicago got a couple wins against Detroit, but they’re just as bad. Nashville just got beat in both of Dallas’s first two games of the season and I like them to bounce back today against the Hawks, so I’m betting a unit on the Preds ML, regardless of if Saros or Rinne start as both are good goalies that should take care of the Hawks without a problem. I don’t mind the Preds team total over 3.5 but I like the ML better.
Jets vs. Oilers (8:00)
This is a pretty even matchup. No lean in either direction.
Wild vs. Kings (8:00)
Minnesota’s started the year decent but they’ve been playing against shitty teams. The Kings aren’t a great team but have a win over both the Blues (with their backup goalie) and Colorado. Not betting this game but Minnesota should win it.
Stars vs. Red Wings (8:30)
After a long delay to start their season with Covid issues, the Stars came out looking just as good as they did last year beating Nashville 7-0 in their opener and then 3-2 in their second game. Detroit’s one of the worst teams in hockey. Half unit each on Dallas moneyline, Dallas in regulation and Dallas -1.5.
Flames vs. Maple Leafs (9:00)
The Leafs have started the season pretty well this year, even though I can’t bet them right. They’re my pick to win the North Division and have the offense to outscore any team in the league. Calgary’s a decent team though so I’m going to lay off this game. These teams played pretty close on Sunday, with Toronto winning 3-2. I’d lean the over here as well but don’t like it enough to bet it.
Avalanche vs. Sharks (9:00)
Like I said in my longer blog yesterday, I can’t figure out why the Avs haven’t been able to win games that they easily should. The Sharks aren’t that great of a team and Colorado should beat them pretty easily, but at a pricy -210, this just isn’t worth betting for me until the Avs can figure out why the fuck they can’t close out games with wins.
Coyotes vs. Ducks (9:00)
Both of these teams aren’t great, but I think the Yotes have more talent than the Ducks do. I think there’s a bit of value to Arizona with Darcy Kuemper already confirmed in net, but not enough for me to bet it.
Golden Knights vs. Blues (9:00)
Vegas is looking like one of the best teams in the NHL and are my current pick to win the Cup. The Blues are their best opponent they’ve faced so far this year are St. Louis is coming off a loss. I’d lean Vegas here but not enough to bet them if Binnington (who’s currently the projected starter) is in net for the Blues. If he’s not, I’ll add Vegas for a unit later.
1u Nashville ML (-180)
.5u Dallas ML (-220)
.5u Dallas in regulation (-150)
.5u Dallas -1.5 (+130)
Record: 30-29 (-9.06 units)
