NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/28/21

Last night on a two game slate, I went 1-1 with a shootout win that I had to sweat out on the Nashville Predators and then lost on the over in Vancouver/Ottawa by a goal when there was 78 shots on goal in the game, Ottawa just couldn’t get more than one by Thatcher Demko on 43 shots. Pretty much broke even just losing .1 unit. Tonight we’ve got a HUGE 13 game NHL slate with 28 of 31 teams in action that hopefully I put together some winners on.

Sabres vs. Rangers (7:00)

On Tuesday, the Sabres beat the Rangers 3-2 to get their second win in a row after being out the Caps on Saturday. I thought the Rangers were gonna win that game but the Sabres have been staying competitive in games this year so maybe they aren’t as bad as I think they are. That being said, I think the Rangers bounce back and win tonight, so I’m not betting the game at all. I’d also lean the over, but with these two teams this season there’s not really any edge to betting it.

Bruins vs. Penguins (7:00)

When these two teams met on Tuesday, the Bruins won 3-2 in overtime on this close game. I think this game could go either way as they’re both good teams that match up well so I’m skipping this game. Pittsburgh has gone over in 5 of their 7 games this year and the Bruins are 4-2 to the under. Not touching the OU on this game either.

Devils vs. Flyers (7:00)

The goaltending from both Devils goalies, Blackwood and Wedgewood has been very good this year and keeping NJ in games for a decent start to the season. Even with that though, the Flyers are the better team overall in this matchup and beat the Devils 5-3 on Monday, with Brian Elliot in net. Tonight the Flyers already have Carter Hart confirmed in net, so I think they should take care of the Devils without an issue. 1 unit on Flyers ML.

Capitals vs. Islanders (7:00)

When these teams played on Tuesday, the Caps won 3-2. The Capitals still haven’t lost in regulation this year (4-0-3). The Isles are a very good defensive team and have gone under in every game this season so I’d expect this game stays under. The Caps have been able to score though and are 5-2 to the over, so I’m not betting it. I’d also guess that the Isles bounce back with a win tonight but since these teams are pretty evenly matched I’m not betting it.

Hurricanes vs. Lightning (7:00)

Tonight is Carolina’s first game in about a week because of coronavirus issues. Tampa hasn’t played in five days since they took their first loss of the season against Columbus on Saturday. As long as Vasilevskiy’s confirmed in net, I’m betting a unit on Tampa expecting them to bounce back with a win.

Blue Jackets vs. Panthers (7:00)

The Jackets got a surprisingly dominant win of Tampa on Saturday before their shootout loss to the Panthers on Tuesday. Florida hasn’t played much and before their 4-3 win in this matchup, only played two games against the Blackhawks. All three of Florida’s games have gone over, and at only 5.5, I’ll bet half a unit on the over here expecting that to continue.

Canadiens vs. Flames (7:00)

Montreal still hasn’t lost in regulation and look incredible in front of Carey Price. Calgary’s a decent team though. Last year, Montreal beat Calgary in both of their matchups. I think the Canadiens win tonight but I don’t really see an edge in betting it.

Wild vs. Kings (8:00)

Minnesota’s coming off of two losses to the Kings and Sharks but before that had been beating all of these California teams. I think Minnesota gets the win tonight, but they’re not a great team and I’m not betting them.

Stars vs. Red Wings (8:30)

It took Dallas until a sick goal in overtime to win against the Red Wings on Tuesday night, giving me losses on them in regulation and on the puck line but cashing their moneyline. Tonight, the Stars confirmed that rookie Jake Oettinger will get the nod in goal for his first NHL start tonight (he saw action in two playoff games last year coming off the bench). I think Dallas still wins and it stays under since their defense is so good, but I’m not betting on a goalie’s first game in the show, even against a shitty Detroit team.

Avalanche vs. Sharks (9:00)

For a cup contender, Colorado’s had a shaky start to the season but has shown signs in a few games of being great. Tuesday the Avs dominated the Sharks 7-3 and they should win again tonight. The Sharks are by no means a good team. I think the ML is expensive here at -240 and there’s not really any value in the puck line at even money, so I’ll take the Avs in regulation for a unit.

Coyotes vs. Ducks (9:00)

Tuesday, the matchup of the season between these two teams was a boring game with the Ducks winning 1-0. I don’t think that Arizona’s a bad team, but they’re not great. The Ducks on the other hand are a bottom 5 team in the league. I think Arizona bounces back to tie the season series tonight, but I’m not betting it.

Oilers vs. Maple Leafs (10:00)

Both of these teams have scoring star power and each have a win in the two games between them this year. I think Toronto’s the better team here and their record shows it, but this is a pretty even matchup. Laying off this game.

Canucks vs. Senators (10:00)

Last night there was 78 totals shots in this game and the over missed by a goal in another blowout game with the Canucks beating Ottawa 5-1 on the incredible play by Thatcher Demko. Vancouver’s likely starting Braden Holtby tonight against Matt Murray. The over is now 7-2 in Canucks games and 4-3 in the Sen’s. Historically going back over the past two seasons, the overs between these two teams are 7-1 since the 2019 season. Back on the over here for a half unit and hopefully Ottawa could put more than just one in the back of the net. I don’t really trust the Sens to score much but its tough to beat a team 3 games in a row and if Ottawa wants to win tonight they’ll have to score more than a couple goals.

1u Flyers ML (-165)

1u Tampa ML (-150)

.5u Florida/Columbus over 5.5 (-110)

1u Colorado in regulation (-155)

.5u Vancouver/Ottawa over 6.5 (+105)

Record: 33-32 (-8.91 units)
