Last night was a grind for a 6-4 night and a 1.14 unit profit! Toronto and Winnipeg both let me down in the early slate but Colorado and Vegas came through huge to turn a losing start into a winning night. Small six game NHL slate after yesterday’s trade deadline tonight.
Today I’m adding future on the Caps (+1600) and Isles (+1300) to win the Cup for a unit each. I think the East Division comes down to those two teams and if the Bruins make a run, I can hedge on them later. I don’t really expect Toronto to win the Cup out of the North, who really are the only contender that could come out of Canada and I don’t really see a team out of the Central being able to get to the Cup Finals. So now with my West futures in Vegas and Colorado as well as the East futures on Washington and the Islanders, I think I have a good chance at decent odds at the Cup Champ.
Bruins vs. Sabres (7:00)
One of the biggest moves of the deadline wasn’t really a surprise to anyone as the Sabres traded Taylor Hall, who’s a free agent after this season and Curtis Lazar to the Bruins for Anders Bjork and a second round draft pick. Buffalo had to move Hallsy as there was no chance he was resigning for the Sabres after this season and since they’re obviously the worst team in hockey, they had to trade him for some value. These teams have only played twice so far this season, with the B’s taking both of them. I’d expect for them to go 3-0 today. The Sabres have played better recently but they’re not gonna be able to keep up with the Bruins tonight, who are looking to bounce back from back to back losses with the trade deadline additions looking to make an impact against their former teams. I’ll take Boston in regulation for 1.5 units.
Capitals vs. Flyers (7:00)
Like I said earlier, today I put in a future on the Caps to win the Cup. I think they can at least get to the East Finals if not the Cup Finals where anything can happen. Washington’s playing great hockey and they made a blockbuster trade yesterday sending a first round pick, second round pick, Jakub Vrana and Richard Panik to Detroit in exchange for Anthony Mantha. The Flyers are a broken disappointment and won’t be making the playoffs this year. In four games this season between these teams this season, the Caps have won the last three and are 3-1 against Philly. I think the line on this game’s much too cheap on the Caps so I’ll take them on the ML for 1.5 units as well as a half unit each on the puck line and the Caps team total over 3.5.
Devils vs. Rangers (7:00)
Neither of these teams have been great this year. They’re 2-2 against each other this year and all four of those games have gone over. The Rangers are the more talented team here and I’d think they win their third straight against the Devils tonight but I’m not betting it. I will take the alternate over 5.5 for a unit. I don’t mind the over 6 at even money either but since it’s cheap enough I’ll take the 5.5 instead for the extra .35 risk to need one less goal to win.
Maple Leafs vs. Flames (7:30)
Calgary’s done for the year and they were sellers at the deadline yesterday dealing David Rittich (to the Leafs) and Sam Bennett (to Florida). The Leafs are coming off a disappointing loss last night where they lost 4-2 to Montreal and the Flames are off a 6-0 huge win in the battle of Alberta on Saturday night. I’d think Toronto, who’s 6-2 against Calgary this year should win this one, but I don’t have faith in betting them.
Predators vs. Lightning (8:00)
Smashville’s been very good lately, going 12-3 (one of those 3 losses were in a 3-0 shootout loss to the Bolts last week) in their last 15 games. The defending Cup Champs though are the much better team here and they’re 7-1 against the Preds this season. I’ll take Tampa for a unit here in what could definitely be a preview of a first round playoff matchup.
Stars vs. Panthers (8:30)
Florida’s been an overachiever this year and Dallas has been an underachiever. In six games between these teams this season, the Panthers are 4-2 against the Stars. I lost on the Star’s 4-1 win on Saturday afternoon where Florida’s offense just didn’t show up to play. I think Florida bounces back here so I’ll take them for a unit. I’d lean the under here too which is 5-1 but I’m not betting on it.
