Last night had more unexpected results as the NHL season’s coming to an end. Some teams are playing for seeding in the playoffs, some teams are resting guys, some teams just don’t care anymore till the playoffs start. Since its been tough to predict, I’m going to be treading very lightly before getting ready to crush the playoffs!
Capitals vs. Flyers (7:00)
The Caps are coming into this game off of a very emotional game against the Rangers that took the hockey world by storm with more fights than a UFC fight in a 4-2 win. They’re currently sitting two points back from the Penguins for first place in the East and I feel like they are actually playing for something here. The Caps are 5-1 against the lousy Flyers this year and have scored at least three goals in all of those games (at least 4 in all but one). The over is also 5-1 on the season in games between these two teams. I’ll take a unit each on the Caps ML, Caps TT over 3.5 and the alternate over 6.
Blue Jackets vs. Red Wings (7:00)
Neither of these teams are playing for anything and have sucked all year. Matiss Kivlenieks is getting his first start in goal for Columbus tonight which feels like they’re trying to tank to me. The season series between these two shitty teams is 3-3 and on goaltending alone I’d lean the Red Wings here but no way I’m betting that. I’d also lean the under, but at only 5 goals I don’t see any edge in betting it and the alternate line is too expensive with the uncertainty in goal. Under 5 in the six games this season is 2-0-4 so there’s really no edge in betting it like there would be on the 5.5 line. I’ll skip this game entirely.
Lightning vs. Stars (7:00)
In order for Tampa to end in first place in the East, they need to win their last three games and for Carolina to lose both of their remaining games to Nashville in regulation. Highly unlikely that happens. Tampa does seem to care to still play for seeding with six wins in their last seven games. After Wednesday night’s 6-2 game, that I got my only win on that night, the Bolts are 6-1 on the season against the Dallas Stars that they played in last year’s Cup Finals. Technically Dallas hasn’t been eliminated from the playoffs yet and they’re four points back from Nashville for the last spot in the East. So they need as many points as they can get in their last three games and for the Preds to lose in their final two games against Carolina. With the factor of that Dallas has a lot more to play for with that outside shot at the playoffs and Tampa not really having any real playoff impact from the result of this game, I’ll skip betting this game. I’d lean Tampa here.
Wild vs. Ducks (8:00)
Minnesota’s pretty much just playing for home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs against Colorado. They do have a small shot at chasing down Vegas for first place in the West but I think that’s highly unlikely with so few games remaining for both teams and being five points behind them. Despite winning three of their last five games, the Ducks blow. Minnesota’s 5-1 against Anaheim this season and they should win tonight again at home, but at -300, I don’t want to lay the expensive price on this game, so I’ll skip it.
Golden Knights vs. Blues (10:00)
This game is a preview of the most likely first round playoffs series in the West. Vegas is 4-2 on the season against the Blues and I’ll likely be betting on Vegas in that first round. I’d lean the Knights win this one but (other than the HIGHLY unlikely scenario that the LA Kings win their last five games and the Blues lose their last five) since this game doesn’t really matter for either of these teams, I’ll skip betting it.
Kings vs. Avalanche (10:00)
The Avs seem to be playing pretty lazy in their last few games and watching them it looks like they don’t care to compete and just want to get to their meaningful games in the playoffs. It doesn’t look like they’re going to chase down Vegas for first place. I’d obviously lean Colorado wins here but how they’ve played the last few games doesn’t give me confidence enough to bet them at -290, so I’ll skip this game.
Sharks vs. Coyotes (10:00)
With their 4-2 loss to the Kings on Wednesday, the Arizona Coyotes have officially been eliminated from the playoffs. Both these teams are deflated and this game means nothing. On the season the season series between these teams is tied at 3. I’d lean the Sharks, who have been scoring lately but since I’d give the goaltending edge to Arizona, I’ll skip betting this game.
