We’re already into the Quarterfinals for the opening round of the 2021 PLL playoffs with the Top 7 teams in the league battling for the 2021 PLL Championship in a single elimination tournament. The Whipsnakes are back to back champs in the first two years of the PLL. Do they three peat or does the Premier Lacrosse League crown a new champion?
Archers vs. Chaos (8/20 8:30)
Previously this season, the #3 Archers and #6 Chaos played twice, splitting those games with a 12-8 Archers win in Week 2 and then an 11-9 upset by the Chaos last weekend. I think that loss was a big letdown game for the Archers. The Archers are the way better team in this matchup and in a playoff game that they have to win, I think the Archers turn it up tonight and Blaze Riordan’s stellar play in goal won’t be enough to keep the Chaos in this game. I have a 3 unit future on the Archers to win the whole league which I’m just letting ride since I still think that even though they’ve been inconsistent, they’re in my eyes the best team in the league lead by Grant Amend who I’d expect is the MVP. In addition to that, for tonight’s game, I’ll take the Archers ML for half a unit and to cut down on some juice, I’ll take the -1.5 goal line for half a unit as well. I also like the under on this game. I think this ends up being a goalie battle between Riordan and the other goalie of the year nominee Adam Ghitelman and both regular season games these teams played only had 20, so for a half unit I’ll take the under 23.5.
Atlas vs. Cannons (8/21 2:30)
The Atlas shocked the league this year and with their fresh new offense lead by likely rookie of the year, Jeff Teat, they find themselves with the #2 seed, tied with the Waterdogs for the best record in the league this season. The expansion #7 seed Cannons looked great to start the season but with a bunch of one goal loss games, including the two losses to the Atlas which were a great 18-17 game in Week 3 and a 13-12 game in Week 7. I expect the same result in this game, with the Atlas winning a close one. Although I wouldn’t be shocked if the best lacrosse player in the world, Lyle Thompson turns it on for the Cannons, I still don’t think the Cannons are a good enough team to be able to beat the Atlas offense. I’ll take Atlas ML for a unit.
Redwoods vs. Whipsnakes (8/21 6:00)
This is a very interesting matchup to me between these two big rivals as the Whipsnakes come into the playoffs as back to back champions. Although they’ve struggled at points in the year, the last few weeks with Matt Rambo back on their attack, the Whips look pretty good, end to end. The Redwoods are going to try to rally for a championship in legend Kyle Harrison’s last ride. These two 5-4 teams split their matchups this season with the Woods beating the Whips 13-7 in Week 5 and the Whipsnakes getting their revenge and finally scoring in a 14-12 win last week. I think this ends up being a great game. I’d lean the over and slightly would lean the Whips, but I’m not betting this game.
