After a great PLL season with a ton of upsets, many great games and some awesome surprises in the playoffs, we’re finally at the 2021 PLL Championship game, Whipsnakes vs. Chaos in Washington, DC for a rematch of last year’s ‘ship.
Whipsnakes vs. Chaos (9/19 12:00)
In last year’s wild championship between these two teams, the Chaos defense stepped up and had a 4-2 lead at halftime after scoring 4 straight goals and then finished the 3rd quarter 6-3 Chaos but it was a different story that ended the game as the Whips took over, lead by Zed William’s six goals (five in the 4th quarter) on a 10-0 run (9 in the 4th quarter), for the Whipsnakes to go back to back and win their second straight championship in the two years of the PLL’s existence. This year the Chaos looked like shit to start the season, but cranked it up during the playoffs knocking off the Archers 13-10 in the quarterfinals, then crushed the Atlas 15-9. The Whips had their struggles with injuries through the season as well but picked up the pace in the playoffs to find themselves in their third straight championship game and looking for a three peat and to keep the crown as the only champs the league has ever seen. To get here this season, the Whips beat the Redwoods in a hard fought 14-13 game in the quarterfinals and then took down the #1 seed Waterdogs 14-10 in the semis. These two teams met once in the regular season, early in Week 1 where the Whips won 13-7, but these are both quite different teams now. Statistically these teams have matched up pretty even this year with the slight edge in scoring going to the Whipsnakes (102 vs. 96) with a slight 0.6 scores per game advantage (11.3 vs. 10.7). The Chaos allow less per game though with a 11.7 average vs. the Whips 12.6. The Whipsnakes average 14 more shots per game (47.3 vs. 33.9) but the Chaos shooting are more accurate (29% vs. 23%). I think this game comes down to defense and goaltending for the Chaos vs. the Whipsnakes lethal attack. If goalie of the year and league MVP Blaze Riordan is good in goal today, the Chaos pull off the upset. I’ll take the Chaos +1.5 today for half a unit. On the ML, I’d slightly lean the Whipsnakes to win but I don’t think there’s value to betting that. The OU set at 23.5 I think is spot on and ends up within a goal or two of that in either direction.
.5u Chaos +1.5 (-112)
Record: 19-27 (-19.5 units)
