I crushed the Blues game last night going 3-0 on it for +2.5 units. Tonight we have another huge NHL slate with several favorable matchups. I break them all down and give my picks.
Sabres vs. Canucks (7:00)
The Sabres have been shockingly pretty good through their two games this season, getting wins against Montreal and Arizona (who both look to be with Buffalo as some of the worst teams in hockey this season). Tonight they play the Canucks that I think are a step up from Buffalo and should give the Sabres their first loss of the season. I’ll take Vancouver ML for half a unit.
Canadiens vs. Sharks (7:00)
This is a terrible game. The Canadiens suck without Carey Price in the lineup to save them. The Sharks I’d expect to be pretty bad this season as well but surprised me with a 4-3 win against the Jets in their season opener on Saturday night. I’d lean the over in this game but I’m laying off it entirely.
Lightning vs. Panthers (7:00)
A rematch of the Battle of Florida where Tampa won in an electric series in the first round of the playoffs last season. In the offseason, I think Florida got better while Tampa got worse (and they lost their best player, Nikita Kucherov to injury now too). I crushed betting overs on this matchup last season and I’m jumping right on that again tonight with a unit on the alternate over 5.5. I’d lean that Florida gets their revenge with a win tonight too but I’m not betting it.
Devils vs. Kraken (7:00)
The expansion Seattle Kraken are coming off an embarrassing 6-1 loss last night to the Flyers and are 1-3 so far. Not great. New Jersey, who got significantly better in the offseason opened the season with a 4-3 win on Friday night on Jack Hughes OT winner. Tonight with the Devils on several days rest and the Kraken on the second leg of their back to back on the road, I’ll take the Devils ML here for half a unit.
Penguins vs. Stars (7:00)
The Penguins have been fantastic to start the season, all without their best players in the lineup (Sid, Geno and Guenztel). Dallas experienced a ton of injuries last year for a pretty disappointing season and now that they’re healthy I expected more from them this season than how they have looked so far this season. I’d expect the Penguins to be able to score on Holtby tonight and would lean they win but don’t really trust Jarry to bet on them to win. I’d also lean the over. I’ll take the Pens TT over 3 for half a unit tonight.
Capitals vs. Avalanche (7:00)
This should be a great game tonight between two pretty good teams. I had originally leans the Caps in this game with Landeskog still out but with MacKinnon announced back in the lineup tonight and off the COVID list, I think the Avs are the better team here that should get the win on the road tonight. I’d expect this to be a pretty close game with both teams scoring. I’ll take the alternate over 5.5 here for half a unit.
Red Wings vs. Blue Jackets (7:30)
Both of these teams I expected to have lousy seasons but have impressed me to start the season beating up on bad teams. I’d lean the Blue Jackets win this one on the road in what might actually be an unexpectedly good game. I’ll take the over in this game for half a unit at even money.
Blackhawks vs. Islanders (8:00)
I had higher expectations for both of these teams but have both started the season lousy. Chicago has looked like complete shit in all three of their games so far and the Isles (who was one of my top picks to win the Cup this year) haven’t looked good defensively at all in their two games against Carolina and Florida. Its still so early in the season and this feels like it is a good spot for the Isles to make things right. I’ll take a stab on the Isles for half a unit, they’re the way better team here so the only way I see them losing this game is if Flower steals it away in goal, but with a lousy Hawks D, I don’t have too much of an expectation that happens.
Predators vs. Kings (8:00)
The Predators aren’t going to have a good year and they’ve started the season 0-2 with one goal losses to Seattle and Carolina. The Kings improved in the offseason with their younger players playing a more prominent role and won 6-2 against Vegas in their opener before losing 3-2 to the Wild. I’d lean the Kings win this game but I’m not betting against Juuse Saros at home in this one. I’d lean the under as well. Staying off this game entirely.
Wild vs. Jets (8:00)
Through their two games this season (where I bet on them in both), the Jets have been tough to figure out in those two losses to the Ducks and the Sharks, with staying out of the box being a deciding factor in those games. The Wild have done what they’re supposed to in their two games, getting wins against the inferior Ducks and Kings. Not too impressive though in either of those one goal wins. Minnesota should win this game but it wouldn’t shock me if they don’t. I’ll lay off this one.
Oilers vs. Ducks (9:00)
The Oilers have pretty much been as expected through their first two games of the season, with a 3-2 win over Vancouver and a 5-2 statement in the Battle of Alberta. The Ducks have surprised me with both of their wins, capitalizing on power plays to beat Winnipeg and then outplaying Calgary (who might be pretty bad this year) with a 2-1 loss to the Wild between that, which was eight seconds away from going to overtime. With the Ducks on the second leg of a back to back on the road after their beating Calgary last night and Anthony Stolarz in goal for the Ducks, I think Edmonton wins this game pretty easily. The problem is they’re -300, which is ridiculous in any NHL game. I’ll the the Oilers in regulation (still kind of expensive) at -177 for a unit.
.5u Canucks ML (-160)
1u Tampa/Florida over 5.5 (-155)
.5u Devils ML (-160)
.5u Penguins TT over 3 (-106)
.5u Capitals/Avs over 5.5 (-152)
.5u Red Wings/Blue Jackets over 5.5 (-110)
.5u Islanders ML (-130)
1u Oilers in regulation (-177)
Record (Regular Season): 12-12 (-4.76 units)
