Last night was an interesting one in hockey as some games I crushed and others had strange ways of losing. I went 4-5, breaking even only losing 0.2 units. Nothing. Tonight, an interesting seven game NHL slate.
Devils vs. Flames (7:00)
Calgary’s been pretty good recently, coming into this game with three straight wins at Detroit, Washington and the Rangers. Jersey hasn’t been bad starting the season either with a 3-1 record. I’d lean the Flames win this game but especially with both backups in goal (Dan Vladar and Nico Daws), I’m going to skip this game from a betting perspective. I’d slightly lean the over.
Penguins vs. Lightning (7:00)
The Tampa Bay Lightning look BROKEN this season to start the year and last night got embarrassed by the Buffalo Sabres 5-1 and have a 2-3-1 record. The Penguins have looked great, without a loss in regulation this year and a 3-0-2 record, even without their best players. The Pens are coming into this game off a 7-1 beating that they put on the Leafs. Pittsburgh is averaging 4.6 goals per game and allowing only 2.2 goals per game, which is a bit surprising with their goaltending. When they played in the opening night of the season, the Bolts lost to the Pens 6-2, ruining their banner celebration. I’ll go back to Pittsburgh tonight with a unit on the ML. I’ll also do a half unit parlay on the Pens +1.5 with the Sharks +1.5.
Avalanche vs. Golden Knights (8:00)
Last season this was the Pacific Division Finals matchup that the entire NHL anticipated. In that series, the Golden Knights easily took care of the Avs to advance to the NHL Semi Finals (or Conference Finals in a normal year). Both teams have been pretty disappointing to start the year though, with Colorado at a 2-3 record and Vegas (with a ton of bad luck on injuries to key players) on a four game skid of losses and a 1-4 record. Neither team has scored much, with the Avs averaging 2.8 goals per game and Vegas averaging 2.0. They both haven’t been good defensively either, with the Knights and Avs allowing an average of 3.8 and 4 goals per game respectively. I’d lean Colorado gets some revenge with a win in this one tonight but at -180, I don’t think there’s any value in even putting a half unit on them in this game. I’d lean the over as well which both teams slightly trend towards.
Predators vs. Sharks (8:30)
The Sharks took their first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to the Bruins, the best team they’ve played so far this season. The Predators haven’t been good and are coming into this game with a 2-4 record, most recently with a surprising 5-2 win over the Wild where they got outshot 35-29. The Sharks should be able to win this game so I’ll ride the hot team here for half a unit as a dog on the road. I’ll also do a half unit 2 game parlay with the Sharks +1.5 with the Penguins +1.5.
Canucks vs. Wild (10:00)
Minnesota took their first loss of the season to Nashville on Saturday, losing 5-2 in a game at home where they outshot the Preds 35-29. Strange game. I’m not convinced on the Wild yet this season even with a 4-1 record, they haven’t really played anyone significant enough to really show me anything. The Canucks have played a pretty light schedule too with a 3-2 start coming into this game with back to back wins over Chicago and Seattle. Statistically neither of these teams have been stellar with Vancouver averaging both 2.83 goals per game and 2.83 goals against per game. Completely average hockey. Minnesota has averaged 3.4 goals per game and allowed 3.2 goals per game. Nothing great. I’d slightly lean the Wild to bounce back with a win here but there’s not really any edge that I see in betting it.
Ducks vs. Jets (10:00)
After starting the year with a three lousy losses, the Jets bounced back with wins over Anaheim and Nashville. Neither of those have been great. The Ducks are essentially what most people expected through six games, with a 2-4 record. In the first game these teams played, the Ducks won 4-1 and then in the second game, the Jets got their revenge winning 5-1. Winnipeg is the better team here, averaging 4 goals per game with a decent offense but also allowing 3.8 goals per game with their defense leaving Hellebuyck out to dry. I don’t expect Anaheim to get much going in this game like they did the first time they played. I’ll take the Jets ML for a unit.
Kraken vs. Canadiens (10:00)
The Habs finally got their first win of the season with a 5-1 win over Detroit on Saturday. That was the first game of the season that their abysmal offense scored more than a goal. The Kraken haven’t been great in their short existence, with a 1-4-1 record. Similarly, these teams both aren’t scoring much but allowing just too many goals to keep up with. I’d lean the under here but with both defenses not being great, I don’t think its worth betting on.
1u Penguins ML (+110)
.5u Sharks ML (+115)
.5u parlay: Penguins +1.5/Sharks +1.5 (+107)
1u Jets ML (-137)
Record (Regular Season): 34-28-1 (-0.76 units)
