My decent stretch of hockey picks ended yesterday with a 2-4 night for -2.32 units, mainly swung on the Capitals losing 5-2 in Seattle. Tonight the NHL has a good six game slate.
Sabres vs. Blue Jackets (7:00)
Last night the Buffalo Sabres lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to the Rangers on a goal from NY with just 0.4 seconds remaining in regulation to end a fantastic game in MSG. With that loss Buffalo drops to 7-8-2 on the season and they have three losses in their last four games. They’re averaging 2.82 goals per game and allowing 3.18 goals per game. Columbus comes into this game 9-6 off a 3-2 loss in Vegas on Saturday night and have won six of their last ten games. They aren’t much better than Buffalo defensively, allowing 3.13 goals per game. Their offense is scoring the tenth most goals in the NHL though, averaging 3.2 goals per game. With the Sabres coming off a very disappointing loss last night, I don’t expect them to outscore the Blue Jackets offense tonight. I’ll take Columbus for a unit. I’d also lean the over but not enough to bet it.
Blues vs. Golden Knights (8:00)
The Vegas Golden Knights come into this game at 11-7, winning five of their last six games (ten in their last 13) and keep getting better and better as all of their players start getting healthier and get inserted back in the lineup. They’re averaging 3.11 goals per game and allowing an average of 3 per game. The Blues statistically look good, scoring the ninth most goals in the NHL at an average clip of 3.24 goals per game and their defense is allowing a tenth fewest 2.71 goals per game. They’re on a pretty lousy streak though, losing five of their last six games to drop down to 9-6-2 on the season. I’d lean Vegas wins this game and evens the season series with St. Louis after the Blues 3-1 win in Vegas on October 20th, but I don’t think there’s enough value to betting this game and would rather just stay off it. I’d lean the over but with Binnington and Lehner in goal, there’s no value to that either in my eyes.
Predators vs. Ducks (8:00)
Quack Quack. The Ducks are on a warpath this season that no one ever saw coming and they now sit at 10-5-3 on the season mainly riding their stellar play from Troy Terry who’s got 22 points. Their offense is sixth in the NHL, averaging 3.39 goals per game and their defense is eighth, allowing just 2.61 goals per game with good goaltending from John Gibson. The Preds are 9-7-1 with the eleventh fewest goals allowed per game on great goaltending from Juuse Saros, and they’re allowing 2.82 goals per game. Their offense hasn’t been great though, averaging just 2.71 goals per game. I like the Ducks in this game but not enough to bet on them on the road in Smashville. I’d also lean the under but the best bet to me on this game is no bet at all.
Jets vs. Penguins (8:30)
The Penguins come into this game with back to back shut out wins over Montreal (6-0) and Toronto (2-0) to move to 7-6-4. Winnipeg has taken back to back one goal losses to Edmonton and Vancouver in their last two games and they’re now 9-4-4 on the year. Both of these teams are averaging 2.94 goals per game but Winnipeg is better defensively averaging 2.41 goals allowed per game (sixth fewest in the NHL) vs. Pittsburgh’s eleventh best 2.82 per game. I like Winnipeg at home here tonight, where they’re 7-1-1 on the season and I’ll take the Jets for half a unit.
Avalanche vs. Senators (8:30)
The Avs have been cruising on a four game winning streak after their disappointing start to the season and they’re now 8-5-1 on the season with the third best offense in hockey, averaging 3.79 goals per game. Their defense and goaltending isn’t great though, allowing 3.14 goals per game. That isn’t as awful as Ottawa’s though, allowing a fourth most 3.47 goals per game. Ottawa also isn’t scoring either, scoring the sixth fewest in the NHL, an average of 2.4 goals per game. Colorado should win in a blowout in this hot game but ML on this game at -335 is egregious. Fuck betting a line like that on hockey, ever. So we have to find another way to get the action in on this one. I’ll take the still expensive Avs in regulation for half a unit and the Avs TT over 3.5 for a unit.
Sharks vs. Hurricanes (10:30)
The Carolina Hurricanes are one of the best teams in the NHL this season, they’re 14-2 on the year and come into this game on a four game win streak. They’re allowing the second fewest goals per game, an average of 2 goals per game and they’re scoring the fourth most, an average of 3.5 per game. After their hot start to the season the Sharks have fallen off, losing four of their last five and six of their last eight games. They are only scoring 2.59 goals per game and they are allowing 2.88 per game. The Canes should win this game and I’ll take them for a half unit.
1u Columbus ML (-130)
.5u Jets ML (-120)
.5u Avs in regulation (-200)
1u Avs TT over 3.5 (-157)
.5u Carolina ML (-155)
Record (Regular Season): 97-104-4 (-21.42 units)
