I went 1-2 (-1.67 units) yesterday with the ridiculously bad beat on the Bruins in regulation as they gave up the tying goal (before winning in overtime) with less than two seconds left in the game. Today we actually have a pretty big eight game Sunday NHL slate.
Sabres vs. Kings (1:00)
My Sabres come into today’s game with back to back wins on Friday against Minnesota and Toronto on Wednesday, that although I lost on both of those games, as a Sabres game was fun to watch and Buffalo’s now 18-30-8 on the year. We’ve been a pretty bad hockey team this season on both ends of the ice. The Sabres are scoring an average of only 2.7 goals per game, ninth fewest in the NHL while allowing an average of 3.55 goals per game, seventh most in the league. The Kings are having a good year at 30-19-7 with an 8-3 record in their last twelve games. On the season, they’re scoring just an average of 2.89 goals per game but recently have been scoring much more than that, averaging 3.55 goals per game in their last eleven games. All year they’ve been very good defensively, allowing a tenth fewest average of 2.77 goals per game. The Kings edged out the Sabres with a 3-2 win in their Halloween game in LA. I’d lean the Kings win this game and I’d lean the over as well but not enough to bet on either. during my slump. I’d also expect Alex Iafallo to score a goal for the Kings in his hometown today.
Devils vs. Blues (1:00)
The Blues let me down yesterday with their 2-1 loss on Long Island for their second straight loss after losing to the Rangers on Wednesday. They’re now 32-16-6 on the season with a 6-2-1 record in their last nine games. The Blues have been very good on both ends of the ice, scoring an average of 3.52 goals per game, fifth most in the NHL and allowing a sixth fewest average of 2.7 goals per game. The Devils are having a lousy season at 19-31-5 with only five wins in their last 20 games. They have been good offensively this season averaging 3.04 goals per game, especially as of late, average 4.56 goals per game in their last nine. The problem is they’ve been awful on the back end all season, allowing an average of 3.56 goals per game, fifth most in the NHL. The first time these teams played this season on February 10th, the Devils won 7-4 in St. Louis, scoring five goals in an electric third period. I’ll take the Blues ML and the over in this game for a half unit each.
Wild vs. Stars (4:00)
The Wild have been a great team this season at 32-18-3 with a 16-5-1 record at home but have been on a huge slump lately with only one win in their last six games. They’ve got a great offense, averaging a third most in the NHL average of 3.7 goals per game but allowing a twelfth most average of 3.17 goals per game. The Stars are 31-20-3 and are playing good hockey lately, coming into today on a three game win streak with a 13-4-1 record in their last 18 games. They’re scoring an average of 2.89 goals per game and allowing an average of 2.87 goals per game. Both previous matchups for these Central Division teams was very high scoring with both home teams winning, a 7-2 Minnesota win on November 18th and a 7-4 Dallas win on December 20th. I’d slightly think Minnesota wins this game at home today but not enough to bet on it with the slump they’re in. I’ll go with the over on this game for a unit.
Hurricanes vs. Kraken (7:00)
Carolina’s a great team this season that could easily contend to win the Stanley Cup. They’re 38-12-5 on the season with a 20-4-2 record at home and they come into tonight’s game with a 6-1-1 record in their last eight games after their 3-2 comeback win in overtime against Pittsburgh on Friday. They’ve been great on both ends of the ice, scoring an eighth most in the NHL average of 3.4 goals per game and allowing the fewest goals in the NHL, an average of only 2.4 goals per game. The Kraken suck. They’re 17-35-5 and have only one win in their last nine games. They’ve been bad on both ends of the ice, scoring an average of 2.54 goals per game, fifth fewest in the NHL while allowing a fifth most in the NHL average of 3.56 goals per game. In the first ever game between these teams on November 24th in Seattle, the Kraken got a 2-1 win. I don’t expect that to happen again today in Carolina. You gotta be nuts to lay -330 on any NHL team straight but I’ll go with a unit parlay on Carolina ML and Tampa ML along with a half unit on Carolina in regulation and a half unit on Carolina TT over 3.5.
Blackhawks vs. Lightning (7:00)
The Bolts are still just as incredible as they have been in their past two Stanley Cup winning seasons coming into tonight’s game with a 36-12-6 record and they only have one loss in their last seven games. Tampa has the seventh highest scoring offense in the NHL, scoring an average of 3.41 goals per game and they’re allowing the eighth fewest goals in the league, an average of 2.74 goals per game on Andrei Vasilevskiy’s great play in net (2.32 GAA and .921 save percentage). The Blackhawks on the other hand are not good and likely to be sellers at the deadline. They’re 20-28-8 with only five wins in their last 18 games. They’ve struggled on both ends of the ice, scoring an average of just 2.46 goals per game, third fewest in the NHL and allowing a ninth most average of 3.39 goals per game. And when you have such a great goalie (for now) like Marc-Andre Fleury, that really just showcases how terrible their defense is. I like Tampa to roll through the Hawks tonight on the road, especially with Chicago on the second half of a back to back. Along with my parlay on the ML with the Carolina ML, I’ll go with another unit on Tampa in regulation.
Jets vs. Rangers (7:00)
This is an interesting matchup between two teams that are structured in a similar way, winning on great goaltending but not scoring much. The Rangers are a really solid team this year at 35-15-5 coming off back to back wins with a 7-2-1 record in their last ten games. They have the almost guaranteed Vezina in goal in Igor Shesterkin who has a 1.96 GAA and .940 save percentage and they’re allowing a third fewest in the NHL average of 2.47 goals per game but they’ve just scoring an average of 2.93 goals per game. The Jets are 24-21-10 on the year but they haven’t been great in the shorter team with only two wins in their last seven games. They haven’t been spectacular on either end of the ice, scoring an average of just 2.95 goals per game and allowing an average of 2.98 goals per game. I’ll take the Rangers here for half a unit. I’d lean the under as well but not enough to bet on it.
Golden Knights vs. Senators (8:00)
Vegas is a good team at 31-21-4 but they’ve struggled a bit lately with just three wins in their last nine games, coming off a 5-4 win in Anaheim on Friday. They have a solid offense, scoring an average of 3.18 goals per game and they’ve allowed an average of 2.95 goals per game. The Sens stink at 19-30-5. They’re coming off an 8-5 blowout loss to the Yotes in Arizona yesterday, their fourth straight loss. Ottawa’s scoring only 2.61 goals per game on average, eighth fewest in the NHL and they’re allowing a tenth most in the NHL average of 3.26 goals per game. The first time these teams played this season in Ottawa on November 4th, the Knights blew them out 5-1. I’d expect Vegas wins in this one again at home in the Fortress. No chance I’m laying -278 on a Golden Knights team that hasn’t won much lately but I’ll go with a unit on the Knights in regulation and a half unit on the Vegas TT over 3.5.
Ducks vs. Sharks (8:00)
The Sharks have been in a big time slump lately, coming off an embarrassing 8-0 loss last night at home to the Predators. They have only two wins in their last twelve games dropping them to 24-25-6 on the season. On the year they’ve sucked on both ends of the ice, scoring an average of only 2.56 goals per game, seventh fewest in the NHL and they’ve allowed an average of 3.16 goals per game. Rookie goaltender Zach Sawczenko, who has a .902 save percentage and a 3.29 GAA in his four appearances this season gets the start SJ today on the road on the second half of a back to back. The Ducks fell a bit from their hot start to the season and are now 26-22-9 with just three wins in their last ten games after a 5-4 loss to Vegas on Friday. They’ve been slightly better than the Sharks on both ends, scoring an average of 2.89 goals per game and allowing an average of 3.04 goals per game. These teams just played a couple weeks ago on February 22nd with the Ducks winning 4-3 in a shootout at home while being outshot 43-29. I like Anaheim to win this game today with the Sharks coming off that demoralizing loss yesterday on the second half of a back to back. I’ll go with a half unit on the Ducks ML here.
