PLL Weekly Gambling Preview – Semifinals 2022

We got some impressive showings in the quarterfinals last week of the PLL playoffs from the Archers, Waterdogs and Chaos to move onto the semis this week. I went 2-2 on my bets to lose 0.78 units. Let’s bounce back this week with these four teams battling it out tomorrow in Washington DC for a spot in this season’s championship game.

Whipsnakes vs. Waterdogs (9/11 1:00)

Last weekend in Boston the Waterdogs took down the Atlas in dramatic fashion, scoring early and often on their way to a 19-14 victory to advance to the semi finals to face the 9-1 Whipsnakes who had a bye week last week with the best regular season record in the league. The Whips have played in all three championship games in PLL history, winning the first two championships in 2019 and 2020 before losing to the Chaos last season. They rode defense through their fantastic regular season to achieve their 9-1 record. The Whipsnakes gave up the fewest goals in the league this year, an average of only 9.8 scores per game. Their offense wasn’t all that impressive though, averaging just 11.8 scores per game. This team has a winning pedigree with their only playoff loss in PLL history coming in last season’s championship. And this season, they’ve continued their winning ways with their only loss coming in Week 5 in Minneapolis against the same Waterdogs they’ll look to get their revenge on this week.  The Waterdogs started off the season slowly, going 0-3 in their first three games but turned it around as the season went on, riding out the rest of the year to finish off 5-5, dropping their last two regular season games to the Archers and Redwoods. They impressed me last week in their 19-14 win over the Atlas in the first round of the playoffs. They had to outwork the best face off man in the league in Trevor Baptiste to get possessions and won 52% of their draws. Then with a 52% shooting percentage, they scored a season high 19 scores on their 33 shots, with two two goals. Dillon Ward made 13 saves and had a 52% save percentage on the other end of the field on the shots he saw. The Dogs have lead the league in scoring this season, averaging 13 scores per game but they’ve struggled defensively at times, allowing an average of 13.3 scores per game, second most in the PLL and the most of any team that made the playoffs. These two teams who are both contending to win the championship split their two games they played during the regular season this year, both in one score games. The Whips won their first matchup 12-11 in overtime week 2 in Charlotte before the Waterdogs got their revenge with an 11-10 regulation win in Week 5 in Minnesota. I think this ends up being a close game that’s likely decided by a goal with the Whipsnakes going to their fourth straight PLL championship game in the four seasons since the league began. That being said, I don’t think its worth betting on. If anything I’d go with Whips ML but I don’t think that’s worth the -180 price but if I went with the score line I’d probably lean the Waterdogs +1.5. I’ll just skip this game from a betting perspective. And then from the over/under, the Whipsnakes make me lean the under but the Waterdogs make me lean the over, so the OU isn’t worth betting either. Can’t wait to watch it though.

Archers vs. Chaos (9/11 3:30)

The Chaos came into this season as the defending champions after catching fire late last season and riding that into the playoffs to the championship game and then beating the Whipsnakes to win the whole thing. This season didn’t go great for them in the regular season though as they went 2-8 and limped into the playoffs with the last spot, finishing only above the Cannons. Last week everything changed in the playoffs though as they dominated and knocked off the second place Chrome in an 11-3 victory with easily the best defensive showing of any game this season by any team in the league. Last year’s reigning MVP Blaze Riordan made 15 saves with an 83% save percentage last week to get that win. The Chaos struggled on both ends of the field in the regular season though. They scored the fewest goals in the PLL this season, averaging only 10.1 scores per game and they’ve allowed the second most of any team that made the playoffs, an average of 12.6 scores per game. The Archers entered this season (and last season for that matter) as my pick to win the championship. Their offense is phenomenal and has so much depth that no other team in the league can say they have. Their whole midfield could arguably be starting attackmen on most teams in the PLL. That hasn’t totally translated into wins though, as they came into the playoffs with a 6-4 record and they hadn’t been able to get a win against any team this season with a winning record. The closest to that was a win over the Waterdogs who finished 5-5 on the regular season. That spectacular Archers offense finished the regular season with the highest scoring offense in the league, tied with the Waterdogs, averaging 13 scores per game and they have been decent defensively, allowing an average of 11 scores per game. Last week they took down the Redwoods (who came into the playoffs with a losing record) in a 13-8 game and this week they get to face off against another team with a losing record in the Chaos. The Archers and Chaos have played twice this year in the regular season with the Archers getting a 17-12 win in Week 2 and then an 11-8 win in Week 10. Although it scares me betting against the Chaos who have that winning pedigree trying to defend their crown, are coming off that incredible defensive performance last week and having Big Blaze in the cage, I think its finally the Archers time to prove they belong in the ship. I think the Archers deep offense overpowers the Chaos and gets them in the championship win with a win this week. As my only bet of the semifinals, I’ll take the Archers ML for a unit.

Bets

1u Archers ML (-186)

Record: 31–27 (-5.52)
