After great back to back wins against the Habs and Blues, the Sabres lost 3-1 to the Devils on Friday, just getting out played by a really great team. Tonight the defending three time Eastern Conference champion Lightning came to Buffalo for their second game of the season against the Sabres and in a game they actually played quite well, we lost in disappointing fashion 6-5 in overtime.
The Sabres started off tonight a bit slow, looking sloppy to start the game. 7:54 into the game, Brayden Point opened the scoring with a power play goal for the Bolts on lousy defense from the Sabres penalty kill unit 7:54 into the game. Buffalo improved their play through the period but it was 2-0 with 3:12 left in the period as Corey Perry scored on Tampa’s second goal of the game. The Sabres answered back right away on a beauty from Tage Thompson with a nice little spin-o-rama move to get in front of the net before he deked out Brian Elliot to make it 2-1 just 1:06 later and before the period was over, Jack Quinn in transition on a give and go with JJ Peterka tied up the game at 2. It was a slow start for the Sabres but Tampa looked sloppy that entire first period and after the Sabres got their skates under them, they were the much better team in the first period, outshooting the Bolts 14-4.
9:07 into the second period, Tyson Jost got his first goal as a Sabre with extra effort being paid off collecting a rebound and putting it in the back of the net to give the Sabres their first lead of the game. With 3:34 left in the period, Tampa scored their second power play goal of the night, keeping possession of the puck the entire power play until Point cashed in for his second of the night. We went into the second intermission tied up at 3-3.
The Sabres took the lead back with Dylan Cozens ripping one past Elliot glove side on a drop pass from Rasmus Dahlin to make it 4-3 with 10:23 left in regulation. With 5:41 left in the game, Jeff Skinner put the Sabres up 5-3 on a great shot. Ohhhh I wanna dance with somebody! The Lightning made it a one goal game once again just 16 seconds later after Stammer found the puck right in the crease and put it past UPL. With 2:02 left in the game, with the Tampa net empty and the Lightning on the power play, they scored on a Brandon Hegel tip in off a rip from Nikita Kucherov to tie the game up at 5 and send it to overtime.
In overtime, it took 2:44 to get a winner with some fun action as Steven Stamkos ended it.
FINAL: Sabres 5, Lightning 6
Good to get the loser point by taking this game to overtime. Sucks to lose the way we did though. We blew a late two goal lead in the last five minutes of the game. The Sabres played great hockey at 5 on 5 tonight. We outshot the Bolts 37-25, out chanced them 25-17 but the penalty kill blew this game giving up three goals on four opportunities for Tampa. Luukkonen sucked in goal tonight just making 19 saves on 25 shots. Just a lousy end result of a good game. That slow start and the lousy PK killed us.
Bounce back tomorrow night in Detroit.
Let’s Go Sabres.
