NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 12/14/22

Last night I stayed off betting the big 12 game NHL slate and that proved to be a smart move as my “official leans” went 2-4. Tonight I’ll jump back in on this small three game slate.

Senators vs. Canadiens (7:00)

Neither of these Atlantic Division teams have been all that great this season. The Sens are 12-14-2 on the season, coming into tonight’s game with back to back wins after a 3-0 shutout at home against the Ducks on Monday night. They’ve played well lately with a 6-2-1 record in their last nine games. Ottawa’s played well offensively this season but they’ve struggled defensively, which has improved a bit recently leading to their success as of late. The Habs have improved a lot from last season and coming off a 2-1 shootout win against the Flames on Monday, they’re 14-12-2. This still isn’t a great team though and they haven’t played very well on either end of the ice. I’d lean the Sens win at home tonight but don’t see any value in betting on them tonight at -215 and don’t think its worth limiting myself to just regulation, so I will just stay off this game. I’d slightly lean the over but not enough to bet it. I’ll skip this game entirely.

Wild vs. Red Wings (7:30)

Coming off a 2-1 grind of a win against the Oilers on Monday night (my over on that game never stood a chance) the Wild have won eight of their last eleven games to improve to 15-11-2 on the season. All season they’ve played well offensively but have had their struggles on the back end. That has improved recently though. Tonight Minnesota’s got backup Filip Gustavsson confirmed in goal who’s had a 5-4-1 record with a 2.47 GAA, .920 save percentage and a shutout this season. The Red Wings haven’t been great lately. They’re coming off a 1-0 shutout loss at home to the Hurricanes last night and are on a three game losing streak with only two wins in their last eight games, dropping to 13-9-6 on the season. Detroit has struggled a bit below league average on both ends of the ice. On the second half of a back to back tonight, they’re starting third string goalie Magnus Hellberg for just the second time this season in goal tonight. The Red Wings won the first matchup between these teams in Detroit 2-1 on October 29th. I’d expect the Wild to answer back with a win at home tonight. I think the moneyline at -275 is way too expensive to bet on but I’ll take the Wild in regulation for a unit. Additionally for a half unit each I will take the Wild team total over 3.5 and the alternate over 6 in this game for a half unit each.

Flames vs. Canucks (10:00)

Earlier today I wrote a full in depth breakdown of this game. The Flames have been much better on home ice this season and I’d expect them to be able to outplay the Canucks tonight. Neither of these teams have been great but I think the talent for Calgary is good enough that they should be able to get a win tonight. I think the -180 price on the moneyline for Calgary is a bit high so my pick on this game would be the Flames in regulation at the much better -110 price, which I’ll take for half a unit. I also considered the Flames team total over, but don’t quite trust them to score four goals to hit the 3.5 but don’t see value in laying the -200 juice on the over 3.The under is 16-12-1 in Flames games this season and the over is 16-11 in Canucks games this season. Three of the four matchups between these teams last went over with a total of 9 goals, 7 goals, 8 goals in the three games that hit the over and a 1-0 shutout for the Flames in the one that stayed way under. I’d slightly lean the over on this game but not enough to bet on it, so I would stay off the total in this matchup.
