NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 12/18/22

Really solid night of hockey for me yesterday, going 5-1 to win 1.64 units on the big 13 game NHL slate. Today we have a shorter slate with just five games.

Wild vs. Senators (2:00)

Both of these teams have played quite well lately, both coming into today on four game winning streaks, The Wild are 17-11-2, coming off a 4-1 win against the Blackhawks on Friday night. They only have two losses in their last ten games. They’ve played well offensively the whole season and recently their defense and goaltending has been much better as well, allowing a goal or less in each of their last four games. With a 6-3 win in Detroit yesterday afternoon, the Senators have improved to 14-14-2. They’re on a four game win streak with an 8-2-1 record in their last eleven games. Ottawa has struggled a bit defensively this season but they’ve played really well offensively.  I expect a Minnesota win at home today with the Sens on the second half of a back to back on the road, but they’ve played well lately and I just don’t think the -210 line is worth betting. Additionally, I don’t love the idea of buying it down to the puck line or regulation line. I’d lean the under but not enough to bet it. I’ll just stay off this game completely.

Hurricanes vs. Penguins (5:00)

These teams are both very good and playing great hockey right now. The Hurricanes are 18-6-6 on the season, coming into tonight’s game on a four game win streak after a 5-4 overtime win against the Stars at home last night. They have an 8-0-1 record through their last nine games and are rolling right now. Although Carolina’s offense hasn’t been all that great, their defense has been spectacular. The Penguins are on an impressive seven game win streak with a 12-1-1 record in their last 14 games to improve to 18-8-4 on the season after their lousy start to the year. Pittsburgh’s offense has been fantastic all season but they had struggles defensively at times. That has improved a ton as of late though, not allowing more than three goals in all but one of their last 13 games. On November 29th in Pittsburgh, the Hurricanes got a 3-2 win in overtime to end a close game. I’d lean the Pens get a close win on the road today and would lean the under as well but neither enough to bet on.

Blackhawks vs. Rangers (7:30)

The Rangers are playing easily their best hockey of the year right now and coming off their 6-3 win in Philly last night they are on a six game win streak to improve to 17-10-5 on the season. They’ve played much better as of late on both ends of the ice, closer to the level that they did last season. The Blackhawks on the other hand are horrible. They’re 7-18-4 and a most likely lottery team with the Kane and Toews era in Chicago likely ending by the trade deadline. After a 4-1 loss in Minnesota, the Hawks are on a six game losing streak with just one win in their last 15 games. They’ve played terrible on both ends of the ice. The first time these teams played this season, earlier this month on December 3rd, the Blackhawks got a surprising 5-2 win in MSG. I’d expect the Rangers to answer back tonight, even on the second half of a back to back. I think the moneyline is too expensive at -245 but I’ll take the Rangers in regulation for half a unit.

Kraken vs. Jets (8:00)

Last night the Jets dominated in their 5-1 win in Vancouver to improve to 20-9-1 on the season, just a point behind the Stars for first in the Central. They’ve played great this year on both ends of the ice.  On the second half of a back to back tonight, Connor Hellebuyck will get the night off with David Rittich confirmed in goal. The Kraken are struggling right now with just one win in their last six games to drop to 16-10-3 on the season after their 3-2 loss in Carolina on Thursday. Seattle’s much improved from their inaugural season last year. Their offense has been fantastic this season but their defense hasn’t been great. The first time these teams played this season needed overtime for a 3-2 Jets win in Seattle on November 13th. I’d lean the Kraken win tonight with Winnipeg starting Rittich on the second half of a back to back on the road. I’d lean the over as well but not enough to bet this game. I’ll just stay off it completely.

Sharks vs. Flames (10:00)

The Flames are struggling right now. They’re on a five game losing streak, coming off a 5-2 loss at home to the Blues on Friday dropping to 13-12-6 on the season. Calgary was my pick to win the cup this season and that clearly hasn’t happened as they’ve struggled a bit below league average on both ends of the ice. The Sharks are pretty bad this year. Coming off a 3-2 loss in LA last night, they’re 10-16-6 on the season. Their offense has been okay but they’ve struggled defensively. I’d lean the Flames win here and would slightly lean the over but neither enough for me to bet on.
