NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/1/23

Slightly losing day on the NHL to close out 2022 with the huge slate yesterday as I went 7-5 but lose 0.39 units. Not a huge deal. Today we have a pretty fun five game slate. Let’s start off 2023 with a winning day!

Devils vs. Hurricanes (3:00)

I broke down this game in depth on my article for StatSalt. As I said in that article, I like the Hurricanes to get a win on the road in a low scoring game. I’ll take Carolina and the under in this game for half a unit each.

Panthers vs. Rangers (5:00)

After dominating the Habs in a 7-2 win on Thursday night, the Panthers couldn’t follow it up as they got dominated on Friday, getting shut out 4-0 in Carolina. They’ve struggled a bit this season, coming into tonight’s game with a losing 16-17-4 record, a huge drop off from when they won the President’s Trophy last season. Florida’s offense has been good but they’ve played poorly on the back end to the extent that their offense can’t even make up for it. The Rangers have lost three of their last four games, coming off a 2-1 shootout loss in Tampa on Thursday and now come into tonight’s game with a 19-12-6 record. They’ve played relatively well lately after a slow start to the season, with eight wins in their last eleven games. They haven’t been as good as they were the last seasons though on either end of the ice but the Rags have definetly improved as of late. I like the Rangers to get a win here on the road and will take the underdogs for half a unit.

Senators vs. Sabres (7:00)

Yesterday afternoon, despite getting dominated and having no business winning, the Sabres found a way to get their sixth straight win with a 4-3 overtime win in Boston. The Sabres are 18-14-2 on the season with eight wins in their last ten games with an 8-1-1 record in that span. We lead the NHL in scoring this season, a very impressive accomplishment for this team. They have struggled quite a bit defensively though. Yesterday the Sens were in action as well as Ottawa lost 4-2 in Detroit to drop to 16-17-3 on the season. They’ve played decent hockey as of late, with a 6-3-1 record in their last ten games. The Senators have been alright offensively but like the Sabres, have struggled on the back end. These Atlantic Division teams have already played twice this season, splitting those games, both 4-1 wins for the home teams. Even without my hometown bias, I’d lean my Sabres get another win here to keep the win streak going. I’ll go with half a unit each on the Sabres ML and the over here.

Blackhawks vs. Sharks (7:00)

These two teams have been horrible this season. The Blackhawks are the worst team in the NHL, coming into tonight’s game on a three game losing streak after a 4-1 loss in Columbus yesterday afternoon to drop to 8-23-4 on the season. They’ve only gotten one win in their last twelve games and just two in their last 22. They’ll just get worse over the course of this season as the long Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews era in Chicago will come to an end by the deadline. Chicago has the worst offense in the NHL and they’ve strugged defensively as well. The Sharks are coming off a 5-2 loss last night in Dallas to drop to 11-20-7 on the year, not a whole lot better than Chicago. They’ve picked up just one win in their last seven games. They’ve been better than the Hawks offensively and just marginally better defensively. In the first game between these teams this season in San Jose on October 15th, the Blackhawks got a 5-2 win. I’d expect the opposite result tonight and will take the Sharks for half a unit. Additionally, I like the over in this game, expect both teams to bleed away goals to lousy offenses and will take it for half a unit.

Kraken vs. Islanders (8:00)

The Islanders rolled hot into 2023, finishing December on a three game win streak with a 2-1 win over the Blue Jackets on Thursday night. The Isles come into tonight’s game with a 21-14-2 record and they’ve been slightly better than league average on both ends of the ice this season. The Kraken have improved a ton from last season, coming into tonight’s game with a 18-12-4 record. They finished 2022 on a low note, getting blown out 7-2 at home by the Oilers on Friday night to finish December on a three game losing streak. Their offense has been quite good this season but they’ve struggled a bit defensively. I’d lean the Isles and the over in this game but neither enough to bet on, so I will stay off this game.
