NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/3/23

With a small three game NHL slate yesterday, I got another slightly profitable day going 2-1 to win 0.6 units. After a few small slates to start the new year, we have a loaded eleven game slate tonight, let’s cash in!

Capitals vs. Sabres (7:00)

The Sabres six game win streak came to an end on Sunday night as they were disappointing in a 3-1 loss in Ottawa after a huge win in Boston the previous night. Buffalo’s 18-15-2 on the season and their offense leads the NHL this season but the defense has struggled. The Capitals bounced back from their 4-3 loss against Ottawa on Thursday with a 9-2 blowout win against the Habs on Saturday night. Washington’s played very well recently with just two losses in their last 13 games, not having lost in regulation in their last seven games. They’ve played well on both ends of the ice. I’d lean the Caps get a win at home here but not enough to bet against my team. I like the over, which I’ll take for half a unit.

Panthers vs. Coyotes (7:00)

The Florida Panthers took a huge downturn this year after winning the President’s Trophy last season. They come into tonight’s game with just a 16-18-4 record, coming off a 5-3 loss to the Rangers on Sunday afternoon. Florida’s only won one of their last six games. Their offense has been pretty good but their defense and goaltending has struggled. The Coyotes took their first loss in their last four games with a 5-3 loss in Tampa on Saturday. They’ve surprisingly been a tough out for teams as they come into tonight with a 13-17-5 record. Arizona has been one of the worst teams in the NHL this season, both offensively and defensively. In the first game between these teams on November 1st in Arizona, the Yotes pulled off a 3-1 win. I’d lean the Panthers answer back with a win at home tonight but no way am I betting them at the ridiculous -335 price. I’d lean the over but not enough to bet that either, so I’ll just stay entirely off this game.

Rangers vs. Hurricanes (7:00)

Carolina’s the hottest team in the NHL right now, coming into tonight’s game on an eleven game win streak, picking up at least a point in every one of their last 17 games. They’ve only lost once in their last 16 games and have picked up at least a point in all but one of their last 22 games. They lead the Metro Division with a 25-6-6 record. Their offense has been decent enough and their defense is elite, one of the best in the NHL this season. The Rangers are 20-12-6 on the season, coming off a 5-3 win in Florida on Sunday to start 2023. They’ve played well as of late with a 9-2-1 record in their last twelve games and have been decent enough but nothing special on either end of the ice this year. I like the Hurricanes to win here and will take them for a unit. I’d lean the under but not enough to bet it.

Senators vs. Blue Jackets (7:00)

The Blue Jackets have been aboslutely horrendous but ended their losing streak on Saturday with a 4-1 win over the lowly Blackhawks, the first win for Columbus after seven straight losses. They’ve been one of the worst teams in the league on both ends of the ice. The Sens, despite not being great at 17-17-3 on the season have played pretty well lately and coming off a 3-1 win over my Sabres on Sunday to start 2023, they’ve won seven of their last eleven games. Ottawa has been alright offensively but they have struggled on the back end. I like the Senators to win here and will take them in regulation for a unit (I don’t think the -215 moneyline is worth it). I’d lean the over but not enough to bet it and have to rely on Columbus to score.

Maple Leafs vs. Blues (7:00)

Toronto’s been fantastic this season. Coming off a 6-2 win in Colorado to finish off 2022 (my under didn’t stand a chance in that game), they’re 23-8-6 on the season having won 13 of their last 17 games. Their offense has been decent this year and their defense has shockingly been phenomenal. The Blue are 17-17-3 on the season and they’ve been very streaky and inconsistent this year. Coming off a 5-2 loss to the Wild on Saturday, they’ve only won one of their last five games but have picked up at least a point in eight of their last ten games. The offense for St. Louis has been good this season but their defense and goaltending has sucked. The first game between these teams this season, just a week ago on December 27th in St. Louis, the Leafs needed overtime but got a 5-4 win. I’d expect they win again. I think the moneyline is too expensive but do like it a lot if you want to play it in parlays. I’ll take the little bit bigger of a risk for Toronto to get it done in regulation for half a unit.

Predators vs. Canadiens (8:00)

Both of these teams have been struggling this season. The Habs got embarrassed at home on Saturday night, losing 9-2 to the Capitals which was their second blowout loss in a row after they lost 7-2 in Florida on the 29th. They’re on a five game losing streak with just one win in their last nine games to drop to 15-19-3 on the season. Montreal’s improved from last season but they’re still not a good team, struggling on both ends of the ice. The Predators are 15-14-6 and coming off a 5-4 overtime loss in Vegas on Saturday. They’ve only won three of their last twelve games, two of which were against the Ducks and Blackhawks. Their defense has been pretty good but their offense sucks. I’d lean the Preds win at home but I think the price is too inflated for me to bet on them at -250. I’d also lean the under but not enough to bet it, so I’ll lay off this game.

Jets vs. Flames (8:00)

The Jets have played great this season, coming into tonight’s game in second place in the Central with a 23-13-1 record and they’re 13-6 at home. They’ve won their last two games in a row, beating the Oilers 2-1 on the road on Saturday. Winnipeg has been good on both ends of the ice this season, especially defensively. The Flames are finally in a playoff spot, having won four of their last six games and having picked up at least a point in twelve of their last 15 games. They’re now 18-13-7 on the season, in third place in the Pacific, which is still far away from my preseason expectations on this team to win the cup. They’ve played okay this season but not spectacular on either end of the ice this year. On November 12th in the first game betwen these teams in Calgary, the Flames won 3-2 in a close game. I’d expect the Jets answer back with a win at home tonight and I’ll take them for half a unit as an underdog.

Blackhawks vs. Lightning (8:30)

As I said in my article breaking down this game in depth on StatSalt, I love the Lightning to win this game. The Blackhawks are heavily outmatched on both ends of the ice and I expect the Bolts to score at ease here. I’ll take the Lightning TT over 3.5 for a unit as well as the puck line for half a unit.

Oilers vs. Kraken (9:00)

I broke down this game in depth last night on my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I’d lean that the Oilers win tonight at home. The play I really like on this game though, with both teams trending that way with great offense and terrible defense is the over. I’ll take the over here for a unit.

Kings vs. Stars (10:00)

This is a great matchup tonight between two teams playing really good hockey. The Stars, who come into tonight’s game on four game win streak after a 5-2 win against the Sharks on Saturday have been spectacular this season. They’re leading the Central Division with a 23-9-6 record and only trail the Golden Knights by two points for first place in the West. Dallas has won nine of their last twelve games and they have a 9-2-1 record in that span. They’ve played great on both ends of the ice this year. Despite finishing 2022 with a lousy 4-2 loss at home to the Flyers, the Kings have played good hockey as of late too, winning six of their last eight games, going 6-1-1 in that time to improve to 21-13-6 on the season, sitting in second in the Pacific. They’ve been good offensively all season bu they’ve struggled quite a bit on the back end. The Stars won the first game between these teams on November 1st with a 5-2 win at home. I like the Stars to win here again on the road and will take them for half a unit.

Canucks vs. Islanders (10:00)

Interesting cross conference matchup to close out the night. The Canucks haven’t been great on the season with a 16-17-3 record. They finished 2022 with two losses in a row, not able to get the tying goal to force overtime on Saturday night in their 3-2 loss to Calgary. They’ve played better as of late than they did earlier this season. Vancouver’s offense has been good all year but their defense and goaltending has sucked. The Isles are coming off a 4-1 loss in Seattle on Sunday evening in a game that I’m glad I stayed off entirely, ending their three game win streak. The Islanders have played well this season with a 21-15-2 record on the season. They’ve been decent offensively and have been great defensively. I’d lean the Isles get a win here on the road but not enough to bet on either, especially since they have a 9-9-2 record on the road this year. I’ll stay off this game.
