NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/6/23

Yesterday, thanks to an almost five-unit swing on Carolina, who had 67 shots and 6.06 expected goals but lost, I ended the day pretty much breaking even, going 6-5-1 to lose 0.22 units. Tonight we have a six-game slate, let’s win!

Red Wings vs. Panthers (7:00)

Neither of these teams have been spectacular this season, but they have been decent. The Panthers are coming off a 5-3 win against the Coyotes on Tuesday night and are 17-18-4 on the season, a big drop off from winning the Presidents Trophy last season. They’ve been good offensively this season but have struggled defensively. The Red Wings got dominated in their home loss to the Devils on Wednesday, losing 5-1 (winner for me). They’re 16-13-6 on the season, winning three of their last five games. They’ve been decent offensively but have struggled defensively. In the first game between these teams earlier this season, the Panthers blew out the Red Wings 5-1 at home in Florida. I’d expect Detroit keeps it closer tonight at home but still would lean that Florida gets the win, but not enough to bet it. I like the over in this game, expecting both teams to score and will take it for half a unit.

Capitals vs. Predators (7:00)

Both of these teams are on the second half of a back-to-back after big wins last night. I broke this matchup down in depth with my article on StatSalt. I’ll take the Caps ML for a unit and the Caps TT over 3.5 for 1.5 units. I’d lean the over but not enough to bet it.

Jets vs. Lightning (8:00)

This is an awesome cross conference matchup between two teams who have been playing great hockey all season, under the radar. Coming off a 3-2 win at home against the Flames on Tuesday night, the Jets are on a three game win streak to improve to 24-13-1 on the season, sitting comfortably in second place in the Central Division. They’ve played well enough offensively and have been incredible defensively, with one of the best goalies in the league in Connor Hellebuyck between the pipes. The Lightning are coming off a 5-1 loss in Minnesota on Wednesday that ended their four game losing streak. That was just their third loss in their last twelve games. They’re 24-12-1 on the season. The Bolts offense has been just as great as it has been the last three years as they won three straight Eastern Conference championships and two Stanley Cups, but their defense and goaltending haven’t been quite up to par. The winner of this game is entirely a coin flip to me. I’d lean the under but not enough to bet it. I’ll stay off this game, but it’s easily the best game on the slate.

Blackhawks vs. Coyotes (8:30)

Both of these teams fucking blow. Horrible matchup that could possibly be a fun game. The Blackhawks are the worst team in the NHL this season, coming into tonight’s game on a five game losing streak with only one win in their last 14 games and just two in their last 23 to tank down to 8-25-4 on the season. And they’ll only get worse when Kane and Toews leave at the deadline. This is one of the worst teams in the league on both ends of the ice. The Coyotes are coming off a 6-2 loss in Philly last night and are on a three game losing streak after they had gone on a three game winning streak. They’re 13-19-5 on the season and have been just marginally better on both ends of the ice than Chicago has. I like the Yotes to get a win on the road here in this Central Division matchup between it’s two worst teams and I’ll take a stab on the Arizona for half a unit. Both backups, Alex Stalock and Connor Ingram confirmed in goal tonight and they both are bad enough to be backups on two of the worst teams in the league. I’ll take the over for a unit.

Flames vs. Islanders (9:00)

This is an intruiging game. The Islanders are 22-16-2 on the season, coming off a 4-2 loss in Edmonton last night. They’ve played relatively well on both ends of the ice,

On Long Island on November 7th in the first matchup between these teams, the Islanders needed overtime to get a 4-3 win, coming back from a 3-1 deficit halfway through the third period and getting outshot 46-32. With the Isles on the second half of a back to back, I’d lean the Flames win tonight at home, but not enough to bet on them, especially at the -220 price. I’d slightly lean the under but not nearly enough to bet that either, so I’ll stay off this game entirely.

Ducks vs. Sharks (10:00)

I went in-depth on breaking down this game for my article on StatSalt for the last of four matchups this season between these two lousy California teams. I like the Sharks to get a win on the road and will take them for half a unit. I also like the over, which I’ll take for 1.5 units with both backups confirmed in goal.
