NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/12/23

Another slightly profitable night yesterday on the NHL. I went 3-1 to win 0.7 units, with the Caps not able to mount a comeback preventing me from sweeping the board. Tonight we have a loaded twelve game slate, let’s make it three winning days in a row!

Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs (7:00)

I broke this game down in depth for my article on StatSalt for today. Even on the second half of a back to back, I like the Leafs to get a win on the road here and will take them for half a unit, with a decent, discounted price. I’ll also take the under for half a unit.

Sabres vs. Jets (7:00)

Both of these teams are coming off disappointing losses on Tuesday night. The Sabres are coming off a 4-3 loss to the Kraken on Tuesday that although the score looks like it should have been a good game, sucked. It was a boring game with two teams both playing lousy on the second half of a back to back. That was the Sabres second loss in a row after a 4-0 shutout loss at home against the Flyers on Monday and they drop to 20-17-2 on the season. Buffalo’s offense is the best in the NHL but their defense and goaltending has stunk and I still think its ridiculously stupid that we send UPL back to Rochester. The Jets have been great this season, comfortably in second place in the Central with a 26-14-1 record. On Tuesday night they prevented me from sweeping the night with a disappointing 7-5 loss in Detroit to end their five game win streak. Winnipeg’s played great on both ends of the ice this year, especially defensively. I’d lean the Jets and the over in this game, but not enough to bet against my team. I’ll lay off this game but if it wasn’t for my bias I’d be on the Jets ML.

Bruins vs. Kraken (7:00)

Both of these teams come into tonight’s game on solid winning streaks but there’s a big discrepency in talent in this matchup. The Bruins are the best team in the NHL by a significant margin with a 32-4-4 record and a 19-0-3 record at home. Coming off a 7-1 blowout win in Anaheim on Monday to extend their win streak to four straight. The B’s are the best defensive team in the league and trail only the Sabres offensively. The Kraken are 24-12-4 and on a six game winning streak after a 4-3 win in Buffalo on Tuesday that wasn’t impressive for either team. Seattle’s offense has been very good this season but their defense has struggled quite a bit this year. I’ll take the Bruins in regulation for a unit. I’d lean the over but not enough to bet it.

Blue Jackets vs. Hurricanes (7:00)

These teams just played against each other on Saturday and Carolina completely fucked me. They outshot the horrible Blue Jackets 42-18 and outplayed them significantly but they weren’t able to get the win, losing 4-3 in a shootout. The Canes are now on a four game losing streak to drop to 25-9-7 on the season with their lead over the Devils for first place in the Metro dwindling to just two points after their 5-3 loss against the Devils on Tuesday night. Carolina hasn’t been all that great offensively but on the season they’ve been elite defensively. The Blue Jackets, coming off a 6-3 loss in Tampa on Tuesday are 12-26-2. They’re horrible, one of the worst teams in the league on both ends of the ice. In the first game between these teams on October 12th at home, the Canes won easily 4-1. This should be an easy win for the Hurricanes but after they’ve lost me so much last week, I’m definetely not laying the -335 moneyline and even the -195 regulation line is too pricey for me. I’ll stay off this one. I’d lean the over but not enough to bet that either.

Canadiens vs. Predators (7:00)

The Predators have played their best hockey of the season lately but are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Leafs last night where they gave up the game winner with 1:15 left in regulation. That ended Nashville’s four game win streak with their the first time in six games where they haven’t picked up at least a point. The Preds offense has struggled this season but their defense and the goaltending from Saros has been good. The Habs have been horrible lately. On Monday night they got shut out 4-0 on home ice by the Kraken, dropping to 16-22-3 on the season. Montreal has only one win in their last nine games. They’ve played poorly on both ends of the ice. Nashville won the first game between these teams this season easily, just about a week ago on January 3rd, winning 6-3 at home. I like the Preds to bounce back here with a win on the road and will take them for half a unit.

Rangers vs. Stars (7:00)

Both of these teams have played great lately, setting up what should be an awesome game tonight. The Rangers are 23-12-7 on the season and they bounced back from a 4-3 overtime loss on Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 shootout win against the Wild on Tuesday night. The Rags have look much more like they did last year, with a 12-2-2 record in their last 16 games, playing well on both ends of the ice. The Stars lead the Central with a 25-11-6 record, coming off a 2-1 shootout win on Long Island on Tuesday to finish off my night with a winner. They’ve played great on both ends of the ice this year. The Rangers won the first game between these teams in Dallas on October 29th, winning 6-3 despite playing poorly at the time. I’d slightly lean the Stars win here on the road and the over but not nearly enough to bet this game. I think these teams match up perfectly and I can’t wait to tune into this game tonight.

Lightning vs. Canucks (7:00)

The Lightning have been great this season with a 25-13-1 record and have been fantastic at home this year with a 16-4-1 record at Amalie Arena. After two losses, they’re coming off an easy 6-3 win against the Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Tampa’s been fantastic offensively this season but although they’ve been good defensively, haven’t been quite as good on the back end as the last two years. The Canucks had a fun start to their game on Tuesday in Pittsburgh, scoring three goals in the first period, only to have the Penguins score the next five straight to beat them 5-4. Vancouver’s been lousy this season with a 17-20-3 record and just one win in their last six games. Their offense has been good this season but they’ve been horrible defensively. I like the Bolts to win here tonight and will take them in regulation for a unit. I also really like the over which I’ll take for a unit.

Islanders vs. Wild (7:30)

These teams are both on three game losing streaks, coming off shootout losses but have played good hockey this season. The Isles are 22-17-3 on the year, coming off a 2-1 shootout loss at home against the Stars on Tuesday. The Wild lost 4-3 in MSG against the Rangers on Tuesday, but have been good this year with a 22-14-4 record. Both of these teams have played well on both ends of the ice and should match up for what should be a coin flip game on Long Island. I’ll stay off betting this cross conference game.

Blues vs. Flames (8:00)

This is the second game between these teams in the last two days as the Flames look to get revenge from the 4-3 loss in overtime on Tuesday in St. Louis. They also lost the first game they played against the Blues this season, losing 5-2 at home on December 16th. Calgary is 19-14-9 on the season, underachieving from my preseason expectations of them to win the cup. They haven’t been great offensively but have been fine defensively. The Blues are underachieving too and have been very streaky this season, coming into tonight’s game with a 21-18-3 record, winning four of their last five games. Their offense has been good this season but their defense and goaltending has sucked. I’d lean the Flames get a win here but not with a strong enough edge to bet on it. I’ll skip this game.

Blackhawks vs. Avalanche (8:30)

This is a huge mismatch between the defending Cup champs and the worst team in the league. The Blackhawks have been horrible, with a 10-25-4 record, winning their last two games in a row, beating Calgary 4-3 in overtime on Sunday and shutting out the Coyotes 2-0 on Thursday last week. They’ve been horrendous on both ends of the ice this season and will be even worse now that Patrick Kane is on the IR (and will likely be traded at the deadline). The Avs haven’t been great this season either after winning the Cup last year. They are just 20-16-3 on the season and after their 5-4 loss at home against Florida on Tuesday, they’ve only won one of their last seven games. Colorado’s defense and goaltending has been pretty good this year but their offense has taken a huge drop off from last year. On October 12th, as the Avalanche raised their banner to open the year, they beat Chicago 5-2 in a dominant victory. I’d expect another easy win for them tonight. The -345 price is too expensive here but I’ll take the Avalanche -1.5 here for half a unit.

Coyotes vs. Senators (9:00)

The Coyotes are a lottery team this season, tanking for Bedard and come into tonight’s game with a lousy 13-22-5 record. Although at points this season they’ve been a tough out for teams and have played competitively, especially at home where they have a 7-5-2 record at Mullett Arena. That hasn’t been the case recently though. After a 4-2 loss at home to the Sharks on Tuesday, Arizona is on a six game losing streak, losing by multiple goals in every one of those games. They’ve been one of the worst teams in the NHL on both ends of the ice. The Senators haven’t been all that great either with an 18-19-3 record but they have a significant edge over the Yotes. Ottawa’s coming off a 3-0 loss at home to the Predators on Monday, losing their last two games. They’ve been struggling a bit on both ends of the ice this season. In the first game between these teams on October 22nd, the Sens blew out the Coyotes 6-2 at home. I expect a similar result tonight on the road and will take the Senators for a unit tonight. I’d slightly lean the over but not enough to bet it and have to rely on the Yotes to score.

Golden Knights vs. Panthers (10:00)

This is a fun cross-conference matchup to finish off the night. Although they’re coming off a 5-1 loss at home to the Kings on Saturday that ended a three game winning streak for Vegas, the Golden Knights continue to lead the Western Conference with a 27-13-2 record, and they’re all healthy now. They’ve played pretty well on both ends of the ice. The Panthers have crashed down quite a bit from winning the President’s Trophy last year, coming into tonight’s game with just a 19-19-4 record. Coming off a 5-4 win in Colorado on Tuesday, they’ve won three of their last four games. Florida’s been good offensively this season but their defense and goaltending has been pretty bad. I like Vegas to win at home tonight in the fortress and will take them for half a unit, along with the over for half a unit.
