NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/18/23

Profitable night on the NHL yesterday, going 5-3 to win 1.03 units. Big swing on my Sabres losing in overtime after goaltender interference on the tying goal for Chicago, but we still won. Onto tonight’s five game slate.

Senators vs. Penguins (7:00)

I broke this game down in depth with my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I like the Penguins to win this one on the road and will take them for half a unit.

Islanders vs. Bruins (7:30)

This is another game that I broke down in depth on StatSalt. I like the Bruins to continue their dominant run tonight on the road and will take them in regulation for a unit. I wish I would’ve locked in this game last night when the moneyline was still -165, which has since drifted to -195.

Flames vs. Avalanche (9:30)

Fun matchup here out West that I thought would be an awesome Western Conference Finals last season but that never happened. Both of these teams have taken a pretty big step back from last year. The Flames, coming off a 2-1 loss in Nashville on Monday have a 21-15-9 record this season. They’ve played decent on both ends of the ice but haven’t been all that great on either end. The Avs have won their last two games in high scoring matchups, coming off a 6-3 win against the Red Wings on Saturday. They’ve only won three of their last ten games, dropping to 22-17-3 on the season. Although Colorado’s been pretty good defensively, their offense has strugged a ton, performing not even close to the level they did last year. Early in the season on October 13th, the Flames won the first matchup between these teams at home 5-3. I’d slighly lean the Avalanche win on the road tonight but not enough to actually bet it. I’d also slightly lean the over but not enough to bet it.

Sharks vs. Stars (10:00)

Huge mismatch in this game with suprisingly good value on it. The Stars have been fantastic this season, tied with Winnipeg to lead the Central Division with a 26-12-7 record. They’re coming off a 4-0 shutout win in Vegas on Monday night. Dallas has played great hockey on both ends of the ice. The Sharks have sucked this season with a 13-23-9 record. They played decent but still lost 4-3 in a shootout at home to the Devils on Monday night for their third straight loss. San Jose’s struggled quite a bit on both ends of the ice this season, especially defensively. These teams split their two previous games this season in Dallas with the Sharks winning 5-4 on November 11th and the Stars winning 5-2 on New Years Eve. I’d expect the Stars to finish this season series with a win on the road tonight. I’ll take them for a unit along with two units on the Stars TT over 3 and half a unit on the over.

Canucks vs. Lightning (10:00)

The Lightning have been great this season which should be a surprise to no one. They’re 28-13-1 on the season with eight wins in their last ten games and come into tonight’s game on a four game win streak after Monday’s 4-1 win in Seattle that ended the Kraken’s impressive win streak. Tampa has a phenemenal offense and their defense and goaltending has been good but not quite to the elite level it has been the last three years. They have backup Brian Ellliot confirmed in goal tonight. The Canucks ended their four game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout win in Carolina on Sunday, tying the game to force overtime with just 17 seconds left in regulation. Vancouver’s sucked this season with an 18-22-3 record, winning just two of their last nine games. They’ve been good offensively but have sucked on the back end. The Bolts won the first game between these cross conference teams this season, winning 5-4 at home on January 12th. I like the Lightning to win again here and will take them for half a unit. Along with that I’ll take the Lightning TT over 3.5 and the alternate over 6.5 in this game for half a unit each.
