NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 1/21/23

Slight loss for me on yesterday’s quick NHL slate, going 2-2 to lose 0.72 units. Today we have a fully loaded 14 game slate with most of the league in action. Let’s win!

Sabres vs. Ducks (12:30)

The Sabres got a huge win on Thursday night in a very emotional night in Buffalo after they lifted Ryan Miller’s number 30 to the rafters of KeyBank Center, beating the Islanders 3-2 in overtime. We’re now 22-19-3 on the season. Our offense has been fantastic this season but the defense and goaltending has struggled. The Ducks are one of the worst teams in the NHL at 13-28-5. They ended a five game losing streak on Thursday with a 5-3 win in Columbus in a game no one cared about. Anaheim’s been one of the worst teams on both ends of the ice this year. I like my Sabres to get a win here pretty easily on home ice. I’ll take the Sabres in regulation and the over for a unit each along with half a unit on the Sabres team total over 4.

Flames vs. Lightning (3:00)

This should be a pretty fun cross-conference game this afternoon. The Flames have been disppointing this season, coming into tonight’s game with a 21-16-9 record off two losses in a row, most recently a 4-1 loss at home to the Avalanche on Wednesday night. They’ve played okay hockey haven’t been great on either end of the ice. The Lightning have quietly been fantastic, pretty much locked in to play the Leafs again in the first round of the playoffs with a 29-14-1 record. On Thursday their five game win streak came to an end with a 5-3 loss in Edmonton. Tampa’s offense has been fantastic and although their defense has been good, its not to the same level as the last three years. The Bolts won the first game between these teams this season 4-1 at home on November 17th. I like them to win again here and will take Tampa for half a unit. I’d lean the over but not enough to bet it.

Panthers vs. Wild (6:00)

Very interesting cross conference matchup here. The Panthers are playing pretty well lately despite being a disappointment this season with a 22-20-5 record after winning the Presidents Trophy last year. Coming off a 6-2 win in Montreal on Thursday, they’ve gone 6-2-1 in their last nine games. Florida’s offense has still been good this season but they’ve struggled on the back end. The Wild have been good this year. They’re 25-15-4 and won three of their last four games, coming off a 5-2 loss in Carolina on Thursday. Minnesota hasn’t excelled offensively but they’ve been good enough and their defense has been great. I’d lean the Wild get a win on the road and the over in this game but not enough to bet on either.

Sharks vs. Blue Jackets (7:00)

I broke this game down in depth with an article on StatSalt. I’ll take the Sharks for half a unit to get a win at home and really like the over, which I’ll take for a unit with two awful defenses and two terrible goalies.

Red Wings vs. Flyers (7:00)

I wrote an in depth breakdown on this game in my article on StatSalt. From a betting perspective, I’m just staying off this barnburner entirely.

Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs (7:00)

Big mismatch here between these two Atlantic Division rivals. I broke this game down in depth as well on StatSalt with a full article. I’ll lay the juice on the Leafs in regulation for half a unit.

Senators vs. Jets (7:00)

Pretty big descrepency in talent here between these two cross conference teams and we’re getting a way better price on this game than I expected. The Senators are on the second half of a back to back, losing 4-1 in Pittsburgh last night. They’ve only picked up one win in their last four games to drop to 20-22-3 on the season. They’ve struggled on both ends of the ice this year. The Jets have been fantastic this season and come into tonight’s game with a 29-16-1 record. After losing only one game in a stretch of nine games, they’ve since lost their last two in a row, losing 4-1 in Montreal on Tuesday and 4-1 in Toronto on Thursday. They’ve played phenemenal hockey on both ends of the ice this year and are a dark horse to win the West, especially with their elite defense and one of the best goalies in the league in Connor Hellebuyck. Winnipeg won the first game between these teams this season with a 5-1 blowout at home on December 20th. I like them to do it again here and I’m shocked the price on this game is only -135. I’ll go with 1.5 units on the Jets ML and throw in another half a unit on the puck line at fantastic +180 odds.

Islanders vs. Hurricanes (7:30)

There wasn’t a chance the Islanders were going to get a win in Buffalo on Thursday night for Ryan Miller night, but they led most of the game in their 3-2 overtime loss. New York is on a three game losing streak now with just one win in their last eight games to drop to 23-19-5 on the season. They’ve been pretty good defensively this year but have struggled offensively. The Hurricanes have been great all year, leading the Metro with a 28-9-8 record, coming off a 5-2 win at home against the Wild on Thursday. They’ve gone 3-0-1 in their last four games. Carolina’s played well on both ends of the ice and have been elite defensively. These Metro Division teams split their first two games of the season with the road team winning each of those games, a 6-2 win for the Isles on October 28th in Carolina and a 3-0 shutout win for the Canes on Long Island. I’d expect that trend to continue and will take the Hurricanes here for a unit. I’d lean the under but not enough to bet it.

Stars vs. Coyotes (8:00)

This is a gigantic mismatch tonight in the Central Division. The Stars lead the Central with a 27-13-7 record. After blowing a 3-0 lead to lose 5-3 in San Jose on Wednesday, they bounced back on Thursday with a 4-0 shutout win in LA against a really solid team. Dallas has been fantastic on both ends of the ice this year. The Coyotes are tanking for Bedard and come into tonight’s game with a 14-26-5 record after a 4-0 shutout loss at home on Thursday to the Capitals. Arizona’s only won one of their last eleven games and they’ve been horrible on both ends of the ice. Dallas completely blew out the Yotes in the first game these teams played in Arizona on November 3rd with a 7-2 win at the Mullett. I’d expect a similar result tonight. I’ll take the Stars puck line and the Stars team total over 3.5 for a unit each.

Predators vs. Kings (8:00)

The Kings hold a one point lead over the Oilers for third place in a very tight top of the Pacific Division, also just two points back from Vegas and Seattle. They have a 25-15-6 record and come into tonight’s game with two losses in a row after a 4-0 shutout loss at home to the Stars on Thursday. LA’s been good offensively this season but they’ve struggled defensively, although that has improved recently with the emergence of young goalie Phoenix Copley. The Predators are 21-18-6 on the season and haven’t been all that great. Coming off a 5-2 loss in St. Louis on Thursday, they’ve won two of their last six games. Nashville’s been good defensively but have really struggled offensively. The first game between these teams needed a shootout to determine a winner with the Kings winning 4-3 on October 18th in Smashville. I’d lean they have an easier time getting a win tonight on the road and will take LA here for half a unit as an even money underdog.

Blues vs. Blackhawks (8:00)

The Blackhawks are one of the worst teams in the NHL at 13-26-4 on the season but have somehow found a way to win five of their last six games, coming off a 4-1 win in Philly on Thursday. Chicago’s been horrible on both ends of the ice this year. The Blues have been very disappointing this season and I expect them to be sellers at the deadline, coming into tonight’s game with a 23-20-3 record after a 5-2 win at home against the Predators on Thursday night. St. Louis has been decent offensively but they’ve really struggled on the back end. The Blues already won the first two games between these Central Division teams, winning 5-2 in Chicago on November 16th and 3-1 at home on December 29th. I’d lean the Blues get another win here at home but they’re not worth laying the heavy juice on with how the Hawks have found ways to win lately. I’ll lay off this game entirely.

Kraken vs. Avalanche (10:00)

This should be a fun Western Conference game. The Avs, while still being a bit disappointing this year after winning the Cup and dominating last season, are on a solid run right now, on a four game win streak after a 4-1 win in Vancouver last night to improve to 24-17-3 on the season. They haven’t produced even close to the same level they did offensively last season but Colorado’s been quite good defensively. The Kraken have been an awesome surprise this season, tied with Vegas to lead the Pacific Division with a 27-14-4 record, coming off a 4-3 overtime win at home against the Devils on Thursday (big winner for me on the over). Seattle’s offense has been fantastic this year but they’ve struggled defensively. In a close game in Colorado on October 21st, the Kraken won 3-2. I’d lean the Kraken win at home tonight and would slightly lean the over but not enough to bet either. I’ll stay off this game.

Canucks vs. Oilers (10:00)

Pretty huge mismatch on this game. The Oilers are rolling right now and after their 5-3 win against the Lightning on Saturday are on a five game win streak to improve to 26-18-3 on the season. With two of the best players in the world in McDavid and Draisaitl, even without much depth behind them, Edmonton’s offense has been one of the best in the league. Their defense and goaltending has struggled though. The Canucks are set up similarly, with a really good offense and pretty lousy defense with horrible goaltending. Coming off a 4-1 loss last night at home to the Avs, Vancouver only has two wins in their last eleven games to come into tonight’s game with an 18-24-3 record. These teams split their first two games this season with a 5-3 Oilers win at home on October 12th and the Canucks answering back with a 5-2 win in Edmonton on December 23rd. I like the Oilers to extend their winning streak on the road here tonight against a struggling Canucks team. I’ll take Edmonton team total over 3.5 for a unit, the Oilers in regulation for half a unit and the alternate over 6.5 on the game, laying the juice for a unit.

Golden Knights vs. Capitals (10:00)

This should be an awesome matchup tonight between these two teams that battled for the Cup in Vegas’s inaugural season. The Golden Knights are tied with Seattle for first in the Pacific with a 28-16-2 record. They’re in a bit of a slump right now, on a three game losing streak with just one win in their last five games, coming off a 3-2 loss at home to the Red Wings on Thursday night. The Caps are coming off a 4-0 shutout win on Thursday in Arizona, just their second win in their last five games to improve to 25-17-6 on the season. Statically these teams match up closely on both ends of the ice. The first game between them this year went to overtime with the Knights winning 3-2 in overtime in Washington on November 1st. I’d lean the Caps get a win here on the road but not enough to bet it whatsoever. I’d also slightly lean the over but not enough to bet that either.
