Sabres @ Jets: 1/26/23 – Game Reactions/Recap

The Sabres came into tonight on an impressive four game win streak with a matchup that I didn’t feel great about in Winnipeg but they played fantastic, extending that streak with a 3-2 win against the Jets.

The Sabres looked pretty good early tonight. It was a solid first period as we outshot the Jets 12-6 and limited them to just one shot on their power play opportunity in a relatively well-matched period. Eric Comrie made some good saves against his former team and we went into the first intermission in a scoreless game, looking like the slightly better team and just not being able to solve Hellebuyck yet.

It took till past the halfway point of the game to see the first goal of the game with Owen Power scoring in his third straight game, for his third goal of the season with 9:26 left in the second period. With 5:45 left, the Sabres scored in transition with a great team play from Tuch to Skinner to Tage Thompson, who was wide open for his 34th goal of the season, making it 2-0 Buffalo. The Sabres were awesome in the second period, dominating the Jets and putting a ton of pressure on them, outshooting Winnipeg 15-5. Impressive period.

In the third period with 9:30 left in the game, Victor Olofsson scored on the power play to make it 3-0 Sabres with Connor Hellebuyck on the ice and unable to get back up quick enough to make the save. Huge goal. With 4:46 left in the game and Peyton Krebs in the box, the Jets scored their first goal of the game as Nate Schmidt scored from in the slot to make it a 3-1 game. Pretty trash defense to just leave the middle of the ice completely open. With the net empty and 41.4 seconds left in the game, the Jets made it a one-goal game on a Pierre-Luc Dubois goal where Comrie didn’t have a fucking clue where the puck was.

Final: Sabres 3, Jets 2

Huge win that was really impressive to me tonight. We outshot the Jets 36-21 and actually dominated them by an expected goal rate of 3.52-2.1 to extend our win streak to five straight. The defense, besides on the first Jets goal that took them almost 55 minutes to score, was good when they had to be tonight and the offense sustained possession of the puck in the Jets game for what felt like most of the game. Great win and I was really impressed by the way they played tonight in front of Comrie in his return to Winnipeg.

Let’s Go Buffalo!
