Happy Super Bowl Sunday! We still have hockey today and on yesterday’s giant 14 game slate I went 9-8 to win 0.26 units, making a slight profit with big swings through the day. After yesterday’s huge slate, we have just four matinee games on the schedule which the NHL was smart enough to schedule to all end before the Super Bowl kicks off. Let’s win!
Canadiens vs. Oilers (12:30)
Both of these teams are in the second half of a back to back today after wins that came in quite different ways yesterday after. I broke this game down in depth with my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I expect the Oilers to capitalize easily and often in a high scoring win. I’m loading up on this game with 1.5 units on the Oilers in regulation, 2 units on the Oilers team total over 3.5 and a unit on the over.
Flyers vs. Kraken (1:00)
The Kraken were one of the few teams that had an off day yesterday. They’ve had a good season at 29-18-5 but with the three game losing streak they dropped to fourth in the Pacific, just two points back from the Oilers and Kings and three points back from Vegas. They lost 6-3 to the Rangers on Friday night (easy win for me). Seattle’s offense has been very good but they’ve struggled over the course of this losing streak. They have been inconsistent defensively. Yesterday afternoon the Flyers took the Preds to overtime, ultimately losing 2-1 to drop to 22-22-10 on the season. They’ve been terrible offensively this season. I like the Kraken to end their losing streak today in Philly and will take them for a unit.
Capitals vs. Sharks (1:00)
Yesterday the Caps pulled off a fantastic win in Boston, beating the NHL leading Bruins 2-1 for their third win in their last four games, improvong to 28-20-6 on the season, holding a Wild Card spot in the East. They’ve been quite good defensively this season, leading to their wins. The Sharks had off yesterday but have sucked this season with a 16-26-11 record. I expect them to be sellers going into the deadline. They’ve struggled on both ends of the ice this season, especially defensively. Even in the second half of a back-to-back, I expect the Caps to get a win here on home ice today. I’ll take them in regulation for a unit.
Golden Knights vs. Ducks (3:00)
Both of these Pacific Division teams had the day off yesterday and split their two previous games this season with the Golden Knights winning 4-0 at home and the Ducks winning 3-2 at home. Vegas leads the Pacific with a 31-18-4 record and are coming off two 5-1 wins in a row in Minnesota on Thursday and Nashville on Tuesday. They’ve been decent on both ends of the ice. The Ducks are one the worst teams in the NHL with a 17-30-6 record, but they’ve played well lately with a 5-2-1 record in their last eight games. Statistically they’re the worst team in the NHL on both ends of the ice. I’d lean Vegas wins here, likely pretty easily but the prices on this game are insane, so I’m just gonna lay off it.
