Yesterday with Vegas blowing their lead late to lose to the Blackhawks, I ended up going 4-4-1 on the NHL to lose 1.04 units. Tonight we have just a three game slate, let’s grind out some wins.
Islanders vs. Jets (7:00)
I broke this cross-conference game down in depth with my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I’d lean the Jets win here on the road tonight, but not enough to bet on it. I do really like the under though and will take the alternate under 6 in this game for a unit.
Coyotes vs. Flames (9:30)
The Coyotes are playing themselves out of the Bedard sweepstakes, showing that organizations tank but players don’t. Coming off a 3-2 overtime win against the Blue Jackets on Sunday, the Yotes have picked up at least a point in each of their last nine games to improve to 20-28-9 on the season. Statistically they’ve been terrible on both ends of the ice. The Flames have been pretty disappointing this season as well, with a 26-20-11 record, coming off a 4-3 loss at home to the Flyers on Monday and they’ve only had two wins in their last seven games. Calgary hasn’t been spectacular on either end of the ice this season. The Flames won the first game between these teams with a 3-2 victory at home on December 5th. I’d lean they win again but not enough to even consider betting them at the -225 on the road. I actually could see the Coyotes winning here or at least covering the puck line. I’ll take the Yotes +1.5 for half a unit.
Stars vs. Blackhawks (9:30)
This is a huge mismatch tonight between the two teams on opposite ends of the Central Division standings. The Stars are in second place in the Western Conference, a point behind Vegas as they lead the Central Division with a 30-15-12 record, a point ahead of the Jets. Coming off a 4-1 loss at home to the Blue Jackets on Saturday (huge double loser for me), they’re on a four game losing streak, their longest of the season. They’ve only won two of their last eight games but have picked up at least a point in nine of their last eleven games. The Blackhawks, who I thought were going to healthy scratch Patrick Kane against the Golden Knights yesterday, picked up their third win in a row, tying the game with just 55 seconds left in regulation and then going on to win 3-2 in a shootout. With their three wins in a row, Chicago’s now a still awful 19-32-5 on the season. Statistically they’ve been horrible on both ends of the ice. The Stars won the first game between these teams in a high scoring 6-4 game at home on November 23rd where they came back from a 4-1 deficit more than halfway through the third period to come back and not only win, but cover the puck line in less than 10 minutes. Especially with the Blackhawks in the second half of a back to back on the road, I understand why the lines on this game are outrageous at -435 on the moneyline, -250 on the regulation line and even -167 on the puck line. All unbettable. Even though its pretty heavily juice at -180, I like the Stars team total over 3.5 in this game, which I’m suprised is coming in for cheaper than -200, and will lay the juice on that for a unit.
