NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 2/24/23

I finally ended my losing streak on the NHL with yesterday’s huge ten-game slate, going 9-7 to win a slight 0.32 unit profit. I might have gotten a little too fancy but great to end the bad run of the past week. Tonight we have a six-game Friday night slate, let’s make it two winning nights in a row!

Panthers vs. Sabres (7:00)

I broke this game down in depth with an article on StatSalt previewing tonight’s Atlantic Division matchup as my Sabres are coming off a huge win last night in Tampa and head to Sunrise tonight to play the Panthers. As I said in my article, I’d lean the Panthers win at home tonight, especially with my Sabres in the second half of a back-to-back in the state of Florida, but not enough to bet against them, so I’ll stay off the side here. I love the over though and will lay the -165 on the alternate over 6.5 in this game for 1.5 units.

Maple Leafs vs. Wild (7:00)

I wrote an article on StatSalt breaking down this cross-conference matchup. As I said in that article, especially with the Wild in the second half of a back-to-back on the road, I’d expect the Leafs to win tonight. The moneyline is too expensive for me but I’ll take Toronto in regulation for half a unit. I’ll also take the alternate under 6.5 here for half a unit.

Hurricanes vs. Senators (7:00)

This is a pretty big mismatch despite both teams playing pretty well recently. The Hurricanes are having a fantastic season, leading the Metro Division with a 38-10-8 record. They’re on a four game win streak with just one loss in their last twelve games, coming off a 4-1 victory at home against the Blues on Tuesday night. Carolina’s been great on both ends of the ice. The Senators haven’t had a great season, coming into tonight’s game with a 27-25-4 record. They’re coming off a 3-1 loss in Boston on Monday but have played well recently with a 7-2-1 record in their last ten games. Statistically Ottawa has been a mid tier team on both ends of the ice. I’d expect the Canes to get the win at home here and will take them in regulation for a unit. I would slightly lean the over, but not enough to bet it.

Flyers vs. Canadiens (7:00)

Pretty lousy matchup here between two of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference but they have the parity that this could be an entertaining game. The Flyers are 23-26-10 and after a 4-2 loss in Edmonton on Tuesday, they’ve only picked up one win in thier last six games. The Habs are playing well recently with a four wins in their last six games, coming off at 5-2 win in New Jersey on Tuesday. They haven’t had a good season though, in last place in the Atlantic with a 24-29-4 record. The first game between these teams on November 19th in Montreal was very entertaining, with the Canadiens winning 5-4 in a shootout. Both of these teams have struggled on both ends of the ice for what I see as a close coin flip of a game, with a slight edge to the Habs offense recently and an edge to the Flyers defense at home. I’ll stay off the side, but I do like the over in this game, which I will take for half a unit.

Islanders vs. Kings (7:30)

Interesting cross conference matchup tonight on Long Island. The Islanders, who are probably the most boring team in the NHL are 30-24-7 on the season and currently hold the first Wild Card spot in the East. They’ve playing well recently with three wins in their last four games, coming off a 2-1 win over the Jets at home on Wednesday (easy winner on the under for me). The Isles have really struggled offensively but have been very good defensively, backstopped by a fantastic goaltending from Ilya Sorokin. The Kings are having a good season as well, in third place in the tight top of the Pacific Division with a 32-19-8 record. They are in the second half of a back-to-back, coming off a 4-3 overtime loss in New Jersey last night where they blew two leads and gave up the tying goal with just 39 seconds left in regulation. LA’s been good offensively but they’ve been inconsistent at best defensively. With the Kings in the second half of a back, I’d slightly lean the Isles win here but not close to enough to bet it. I’ll stay off this game entirely.

Jets vs. Avalanche (8:00)

This should be an awesome game to close out the night in the Central Division. The Jets are in second place in the division with a 35-22-1 record and a 20-8 record at home. Coming off a 2-1 loss on Long Island on Wednesday that was an easy winner for me on the under, they’ve only won one of their last four games. Winnipeg hasn’t been all that great offensively, but more than make up for it on the back end. They’re an elite defensive team backstopped by Connor Hellebuyck, who I think is the front runner for the Vezina this year. The Avalanche put together a hell of a game against the Oilers on Sunday afternoon, coming back from 3-0, 4-2, and 5-3 deficits in that game to end up winning 6-5 in overtime on Mikko Rantanen’s game winner with 22 seconds left in OT. With that come from behind victory, the Avs have won four of their last five games and have gone 11-2-2 in their last 15 games. Although their offense has struggled this season, Colorado’s defense has been fantastic. The Jets won both previous games these teams played this season, winning 4-3 in overtime on the road in Colorado on October 19th and then winning in a 5-0 shutout at home on November 29th. I’d slightly lean the Avs get a win on the road here but not enough to bet on it. I do like the under and will take the alternate under 6 in this matchup for half a unit.
