Losing night for me on the NHL last night, going 6-7 to lose 2.14 units. Let’s bounce back tonight on a small four game slate before a huge slate tomorrow.
Flyers vs. Sabres (7:00)
Coming off a disappointing shootout loss to the Caps on Wednesday, my Sabres are in Philly to try to bounce back against the Flyers. I broke this game down in depth in my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I expect my boys to win tonight and will take them for a unit. I’d lean the over, but not enough to bet it.
Maple Leafs vs. Hurricanes (7:00)
This should be a great matchup between two fantastic teams in the Eastern Conference. The Leafs are coming off two losses in a row after a 2-1 shootout loss at home to the Avalanche on Wednesday, but they’ve been a fantastic team this season. They’re comfortably in second place in the Atlantic Division with a 40-18-9 record on the year and they’re pretty much locked into a first round rematch with the Lightning. The Hurricanes are having a fantastic season as well. Coming off a 5-3 win at home against the Jets on Tuesday, they lead the Metro Division with a 44-14-8 record. The Leafs won the first game between these teams 3-1 on the road in Carolina on November 6th. Both of these teams have played great hockey on both ends of the ice. I’d lean the Leafs win at home and would slightly lean the under, but not enough to bet on either, so I’ll stay off this one.
Capitals vs. Blues (7:00)
This isn’t a great cross conference matchup with both of these teams being pretty disappointing this season. The Capitals are outside of the playoff picture with a 33-29-7 record and coming off a 5-4 shootout win over the Sabres on Wednesday night, a disappointing loss for my boys as the Caps came back from a 4-2 deficit halfway through the third period and Tom Wilson scored the game tying goal with just 1:08 left in regulation. Washington’s been pretty good defensively this season but they’ve struggled to score. The Blues are coming off two losses in a row after an 8-5 loss to the Wild on Wednesday night where we were robbed of seeing Flower fight Binnington. They’ve been very disappointing this season with a 29-33-5 record on the year and they were big sellers at the trade deadline. St. Louis has struggled heavily on both ends of the ice, especially defensively. Despite being the lousier team, the Blues won the first game between these teams this season 5-4 in a shootout on November 17th at home. I like the Caps to win this one at home and will take them for half a unit.
Ducks vs. Blue Jackets (10:00)
This is a big game for the Bedard sweepstakes between two of the worst teams in the NHL and I’d actually want to lose if I was either of these teams. Both of these teams rank close to the worst in the league statistically both offensively and defensively. The Ducks, coming off a 6-3 loss to the Islanders on Wednesday are 22-36-10 on the season. The Blue Jackets are in the second half of a back to back after a 4-1 loss in LA last night. They’ve only won one of their last six games and are currently the leaders in the Bedard sweepstakes with a 21-39-7 record. Both of these teams blow. In the first game between them in Columbus on January 19th, the Ducks won 5-3 on the road. I’d lean the Ducks win at home tonight, but I’m definetely not betting a side on this dogshit game. I like the over though, which I’ll take for half a unit.
