The Sabres were disappointing on Wednesday night, losing in overtime to the Capitals and tonight they followed that up with an even more pathetic loss in Philly, losing 5-2 to the Flyers.
The Flyers got on the board first tonight on the powerplay with Owen Tippett scoring on the power play with good passing by the Flyers with 4:50 remaining in the first period. Buffalo played alright in that first period even thou/gh we went into the first intermission down a goal.
In the second period the Flyers took a 2-0 lead just 3:53 into the period with Joel Farabee getting the rebound five hole from a two on one opportunity that Philly initially missed on. Tippett scored his second goal of the game to make it 3-0 Flyers with 6:46 left in the second period, coming off the bench and sneaking in to be wide open. Not great. JvR made it a ridiculous 4-0 lead for the Flyers with 1:39 left for the Flyers. Again bad defense for the Sabres. Horrible period. The Sabres couldn’t control the puck and it showed for us as we went into that second intermission in a 4-0 hole. Horrible play, with the Flyers cashing in on their odd man rushes and Buffalo’s offense unable to generate much of anything.
The Sabres finally got on the board 2:27 into the third period, with a screened shot fired by Viktor Olofsson top shelf past Carter Hart on the power play to make it a 4-1 game. The puck got past the Sabres defense and 5:33 into the third period Owen Tippett picked up his first career hat trick making it a 5-1 game for his Flyers. Way too late for it to matter, Olofsson picked up his second goal of the game with just 0.4 seconds left in the losing effort, tipping in a bouncing puck with chaos in front of the net.
Final: Sabres 2, Flyers 5
What a garbage loss. We actually outplayed the Flyers by an expected goal rate of 3.01-2.47, but it sure didn’t look it. The Sabres outshot Philly 36-22 and had 16 scoring chances to the Flyers’ 12. Very uninspiring game with lousy play on both ends of the ice for Buffalo.
The games don’t get easier. After getting tomorrow off we’ll have a very tough matchup at home Sunday afternoon with the league-leading Bruins coming to town.
