The Sabres playoff hopes are dwindling more and more by the game. Today we took our seventh loss in our last eight games, getting blown out in a 7-0 shutout at home to the Boston Bruins.
Didn’t take long for the Bruins to open the scoring with Patrice Bergeron walking right in to tip in a Brad Marchand pass between UPL’s legs from behind the net, making it 1-0 B’s just 15 seconds in. Not a great start, that’s for sure and our defense looked like absolute shit there. 9:01 into the period, they made it 2-0 with Garnet Hathaway flying up the ice and sniping a shot past Luukkonen. Thank God I at least bet the over on this game. Jake DeBrusk made it 3-0 with 8:20 left in the period, with a 2 on 0 opportunity right in front of the net with Charlie Coyle, easily putting it in the open net with UPL not able to slide over quick enough. Pathetic defense once again. The Bruins got some beautiful chances from the terrible Sabres defense and capitalized on them, scoring on three of their seven shots. The Sabres looked like shit and although they outshot the B’s 12-7 and had some decent chances with more offensive zone time than Boston, but we couldn’t score, even with two power play chances, going into the first intermission down 3-0.
After getting their fourth goal taken off the board earlier in the second period due to a kicking motion, Hampus Lindholm scored one that counted to make it 4-0 Boston with 12:12 left in the second period. Another bad defensive play with Lindholm just sneaking into open ice. God our defense sucks.
On the power play with 9:23 left in the game, David Pastrnak made 5-0, again an easy goals for the Bruins. Less than a minute later, with 8:27 left, Charlie Coyle cashed in to make ita 6-0 game, a goal closer to the over. Let’s get one more, hopefully for the Sabres so we at least don’t get shut out in this blowout. The over finally hit with 2:01 left on a Charlie McAvoy goal to score the Bruins seventh goal, the second time they’ve hung seven on us in the last two games we played against the B’s.
Final: Sabres 0, Bruins 7
Another horrible game for the Sabres that makes a shot at a playoff spot even worse. I get that this was against the best team in hockey, but how pathetic. We actually outshot Boston 27-26 but the Bruins had 18 scoring chances while we had just 14 and we shockingly outplayed the B’s by an expected goal rate of 3.81-2.69. Honestly though, who cares about stats and advanced analytics when we couldn’t even score a goal at home and let a team hang seven on us. Pathetic.
At least the over hit.
The Predators come to town on Tuesday.
Go Sabres.
