Last night was a loser for me on the NHL, going 6-9 to lose 3.74 units. Between a 13 game slate yesterday and a 12 game slate tomorrow, we have just two games tonight. Let’s pick up a winning night.
Avalanche vs. Penguins (8:00)
Interesting cross conference matchup here tonight on this small slate. The Avs are on fire recently, coming into tonight’s game on a six game win streak after a 5-0 win at home against the Blackhawks. The defending cup champs have improved to 41-22-6 on the season and hold third place in the Central Division. Their offense has improved significantly as of late and their defense has been good all season. The Penguins fell out from the second Wild Card spot in the East, with the Panthers overtaking them for the last playoff spot in the conference. They’re on a four game losing streak, coming off a 2-1 loss at home to the Senators (double loser for me) on Monday to fall to 34-26-10 on the season. Pittsburgh’s offense has been pretty good this season but they’ve been very inconsistent defensively. The Pens won the first game between these teams this season, winning 2-1 in overtime on February 7th. I’d expect the Avs to win tonight at home and will take them for half a unit. I’d slightly lean the over but not enough to bet it.
Oilers vs. Coyotes (10:30)
This is such a huge mismatch but is in no way worth the price. The Oilers are coming off an electric 5-4 win in overtime at home against the Sharks on Monday night (I went 2-1 on that game) to extend their win streak to four wins in a row. They’re comfortably in a playoff spot with a 40-23-8 record and they’ve won eight of their last ten games. With the best player in the world in Connor McDavid leading the way, Edmonton has the best offense in the NHL. Their defense and goaltending has struggled and has been pretty inconsistent. The Coyotes are one of the worst teams in the NHL with a 27-33-11 record but they’re seemingly playing themselves out of the Bedard sweepstakes with how fiesty of a team they are. Last night they had a four game win streak and eight game point streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss in Winnipeg. Statistically Arizona’s been terrible on both ends of the ice this year. The first game between these teams in Edmonton on December 7th was a blowout, with the Oil winning 8-2 at home. The Oilers are the way better team in this game and should win easily at home but in what fucking world is this team, with a lousy defense and how fiesty the Yotes are worth betting on at -500. What a stupid price. The puck line at -186 and the regulation line at -278 both aren’t worth even sniffing either. And the juiced up team total at 4.5 at -120 isn’t worth it either. I like the over though, which I’ll take for half a unit. I looked at some props here on McDavid, but him to score is -152. Not worth, along with the team and game shot totals not being worth betting, so I guess I’m just sticking with the total on this game.
