I didn’t watch last night’s 5-4 win at home for the Sabres against the Devils since I played lacrosse instead but I’m tuned in tonight for this key matchup today against the Isles with Buffalo picking up a huge two points in a 2-0 shutout win!
Really solid first period for the Sabres as we went into the first intermission tied up at 0. We outshot the Isles 15-7, generating plenty of scoring chances and although he wasn’t tested much, Eric Comrie finished the period with some timely saves.
The Islanders dominated the second period and the Sabres were lucky for the game to still stay scoreless through 40 minutes. The Isles limited the Sabres to just three shots as they outshot us 11-3 in that period. They held much more possession time as well, but neither team generated a whole lot of scoring chances.
The third period had much more scoring chances early on for both teams with sustained possessions and scoring opportunities but it stay scoreless till just 6:29 to go in regulation as the former Islander, Sabres captain Kyle Okposo scored the first goal of the game with some chaos in front to finally make it 1-0 Buffalo. Jeff Skinner iced off the game with an empty net goal as we went on to finish the game off with a 2-0 shutout victory.
Final: Sabres 2, Islanders 0
Huge to win these last two games in a row to keep the playoff hopes alive. Although it was so low-scoring, tonight was a pretty entertaining and fun game to watch, getting two crucial points against one of the teams right above us in the Wild Card race. Even though it was a double shutout until there were less than six and a half minutes left in the third, there were plenty of chances, as we finished the game having outplayed the Islanders by an expected goal rate of 3.83 – 2.37. We outshot the Isles 35-27 and there was a lot to like in this game for Buffalo. The second shutout of Eric Comrie’s career, a great bounce back for him after he allowed ten goals in his last start a few weeks ago, as he made 27 saves tonight in a good effort, making some timely saves at points to keep the game scoreless. Huge win.
Back in action at home on Monday night against the Habs.
