Coming into tonight’s game on a five game point streak, this was such a huge game for the Buffalo Sabres in Florida, one of the other teams battling us for a Wild Card and we disappointingly lost 2-1 to no longer control our own destiny.
Alex Tuch opened the scoring in the first four minutes of the game but the goal was taken off the board after review due to the dumbest rule in hockey, offsides reviews. Fucking half an inch that doesn’t matter on the zone entry for how the goal got scored takes it off the board. The Sabres ended up scoring first anyway though with a power play goal on a beautiful wrist shot from the top of the circle by Dylan Cozens 8:58 into the game. With 4:13 left in the first period, Aaron Ekblad ripped a shot that took a weird bounce from the post, then off Levi’s blocker and into the goal to tie the game up at 1-1. Pretty fun first period and we looked good in that first period and it was nice to have Tage back in the lineup after he missed three games to injury. The bad part though was that we were in the box three times and Florida scored on one of those. Entertaining first period though, in which we got outshot 14-12 in.
The Panthers looked like the better team in the second period and Devon Levi made a bunch of good saves to keep that period scoreless. Florida had a lot of good chances but Levi came up big to keep the score 1-1 through 40 minutes.
59 seconds into the third period, Matthew Tkachuk tipped in Florida’s second goal of the game past Levi to give the Panthers their first lead of the game. That turned out to be the game-winner. The Sabres had a ton of good chances late, in the last five minutes of the game, even having a six on three in the last twelve seconds of the game, but we couldn’t get one past Alex Lyon.
Final: Sabres 1, Panthers 2
Lousy loss. That would have been such a huge two points in the standings to be able to control our own destiny the rest of the way, but now we’re gonna need a lot of help with Florida getting the win instead. We outshot the Panthers 41-36 and had 28 scoring chances to Florida’s 24. Devon Levi was fantastic in goal tonight with 34 saves and kept the game so close. Sucks to lose that one with Alex Lyon being the factor to the loss.
Onto Detroit on Thursday.
