Sabres vs. Flames: 11/9/24 – Game Reactions/Recap

Coming off a second fantastic win on Thursday, dominating the Rangers in a 6-1 win where all twelve forwards recorded a point for the first time in 30 years, the Sabres followed it up today extending their win streak to three straight with a 3-2 win over the Flames in a shootout at home.

The Sabres got started early again today, keeping the momentum from their quick goals the last two games. Zach Benson opened the scoring just 58 seconds into the game with a beautiful backhand shot in front off a rebound from a shot from the point from Bryson. With 6:32 left in the first period, Tage Thompson shot a complete rip from the circle to make it 2-0 Sabres on a one timer. Another really solid first period for the third game in a row for Buffalo.

After a mostly scoreless second period, with a shot that the Sabres looked like they scored on, the Flames then took it in transition and score their first goals of the game with 2:16 left in the second. What’s wild on that goal though was that there was a delayed whistle on both teams picking up a penalty on the play, but Calgary scored after it was called to make it 2-1 on Matt Coronato’s goal. The refs said the call was made after the goal and it counted but what fucking horse shit.

The Flames tied up the game with 4:18 left in regulation as Backlund beat UPL on a screened shot from the second rebound to make it a 2-2 game. That’s the extent of the scoring for the third and although we had some decent chances, it was onto overtime.

Calgary probably should’ve won in overtime after the Sabres took a stupid too many men penalty.

Tage Thompson had the first shot of the shootout, cranked it off the post after beating Vladar. Sharangovich went next with a save from UPL. JJ Peterka got his first shootout goal of his career on a real nice play. After a sick little kick from Kuzmemko that UPL saved, Tuch went next with the game on his stick. He missed, but with a save from Luukonen on Kirkland, Sabres win it. Three in a row. They don’t ask how you win, they just ask if they do.

FINAL: Sabres 3, Flames 2 (SO)

After blowing a 2-0 lead, the Sabres make it three wins in a row on the shootout. Buffalo might have something rolling here. I didn’t love us blowing the lead, but I was glad we persisted to make it a three game win streak, something I think we did only three times all season. Solid win.
