On last night’s lousy slate I was only on one game, where Vegas came all the way back from down 3-1 going into the third period with 3 goals in 5:44 to win in a 5-4 thriller in regulation, cashing both my bets for a 2 unit win. Tonight there’s a lot of games with some tough matchups. As every day, I’m breaking them all down.
Sabres vs. Bruins (7:00)
Yesterday after their twelfth straight loss, the Sabres finally fired head coach Ralph Krueger which I wrote about and gave my thoughts on what’s next for the team. Even with firing Krueger out, I still think the Sabres are the worst team in hockey and the outlook for the franchise isn’t good. The Bruins haven’t been too great lately, but shouldn’t have any problem beating the Sabres tonight in their first matchup this season. I’m going with a unit each on the B’s moneyline and regulation line.
Devils vs. Penguins (7:00)
Prior to their last game against the Bruins where a rookie goalie in his first NHL start made the save of the year leading to the B’s winning 2-1, the Penguins won their last six straight games before that and are having a really good season. The Devils have been bad in general, especially at home. I’m going with the Penguins here for a unit.
Islanders vs. Flyers (7:00)
Last night the Flyers got absolutely embarrassed by the Rangers as they shockingly got blown out 9-0. Carter Hart hasn’t been good this year. The Islanders on the other hand are one of the best teams in hockey and prior to their 3-1 loss to the Caps on Tuesday night, the Isles were on a nine game win streak with 11 wins in their last 12. Earlier this season the Islanders took back to back overtime losses to the Flyers but I think they turn that around tonight. I’ll take the Isles for a unit.
Hurricanes vs. Blue Jackets (7:00)
In their last game against a much inferior Detroit team on Sunday night, Carolina lost 4-2. Prior to that game they had won their last eight straight. In three games early this season against Columbus, Carolina was 2-1. Nedeljkovic was in goal for the 3-2 loss and is starting again tonight. I think this is a good spot for Carolina to bounce back with a win at home. I’ll take the Canes for half a unit.
Lightning vs. Blackhawks (7:00)
The Stanley Cup champ Lightning are again one of the best teams in hockey this season, but Chicago’s been an overachieving team and have given Tampa some struggles. The Bolts should win this game but I don’t think they’re worth laying the -250 on tonight. Skipping this game but Tampa should win it.
Panthers vs. Predators (7:00)
Florida’s having a fantastic year so far and are 3-1 this season against a struggling Preds team. I think the line’s kind of pricy at -220, but I’ll still back Florida here for half a unit.
Red Wings vs. Stars (7:30)
Last year this game would’ve been a no brainer bet on Dallas. This season though, that story’s very different. Both of these teams blow. Dallas should win this one to go 3-0 against a pesky, yet shitty Red Wings team but at -185, I’m not trusting the Stars in this game and skipping it entirely.
Oilers vs. Jets (9:00)
Last night in the battle of Alberta, Edmonton won convincingly as they beat Calgary 7-3. Both of these teams are sitting under Toronto at the top of the North division, tied with 38 points, just a game out from the Leafs. These teams are 2-2 in their four games this season. With Brossoit projected to start for Winnipeg, I’d lean the Oilers here but I’m not betting the game.
Avalanche vs. Wild (9:00)
The Avs are finally getting healthy and have most of their team back in the lineup for tonight. They’re facing a very hot Wild team and this should be a fantastic game. I’m not betting it but this is definitely one I’ll want to tune into tonight.
Ducks vs. Coyotes (10:00)
Neither of these teams have been good this year. In four games between each other this year, Arizona’s 3-1 and all four games were decided by a goal. I’d lean Arizona to win again tonight but with Adin Hill in net for the Yotes, I’m skipping this game.
