Yesterday I went 6-5 on my NHL picks with some lousy swings in the last few minutes of games to lose 0.54 units. Not terrible. Tonight there’s a five game slate of hockey games with some good matchups to make some money on!
Red Wings vs. Golden Knights (6:00)
Both of these teams are coming into this game off of wins last night. The Vegas Golden Knights beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 last night and extended their good run with now five wins in their last six games, despite missing all of their best players. Detroit came back from down 3-1 in the third period and forced overtime against the Buffalo Sabres before they won it to end their four game losing streak. I like Vegas to win this game but with Laurent Brossoit likely starting this game since Panda started last night, I don’t have enough confidence to bet the Golden Knights here, so I will skip this game.
Blackhawks vs. Predators (7:00)
The Blackhawks are a wreck of an organization and yesterday they fired their head coach Jeremy Collition. Not a surprise by any means. This team is 1-9-2, they’re second worst in the league defensively allowing an average of 3.92 goals per game and only scoring a fourth worst 2.17 goals per game. I don’t think the Nashville Predators are all that great either but they’re definitely better than Chicago, especially in games that Juuse Saros starts. The Preds are averaging 2.73 goals per game and allowing 2.82. I like Nashville to win this game on the road and I’ll take them for half a unit.
Wild vs. Islanders (8:00)
The Islanders are one of the best defensive teams in hockey and after their slow start to the season, they’re now fourth in the NHL in goals allowed, averaging just 2.11 goals per game and coming into this game with four wins in their last five games including three shutouts from Ilya Sorokin (including last night’s 2-0 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Tonight Semyon Varlamov gets his his first start of the season, which i don’t think is much of a downgrade as these guys were arguably the second best tandem in goal last season (behind Fleury and Lehner in Vegas). The Wild are 7-3 but their wins have all been over lousy teams and their strength of schedule hasn’t been strong. They’re averaging 3.1 goals per game and allowing 3.33. The Isles are the better team here and I’ll jump on them tonight for a unit. They should shut down Minnesota’s and score enough to win.
Ducks vs. Blues (8:00)
The St. Louis Blues have been very good this season, 7-1-1 with the third best scoring offense in hockey, averaging 4 goals per game. They’ve also been very good defensively with great goaltending from Jordan Binnington and they’re fifth best in the NHL in goals allowed at only 2.22 per game. The 5-4-3 Anaheim Ducks are worse than their record shows and I don’t expect much out of them. They’re averaging a decent 3.17 goals per game but they’ve been playing a pretty weak schedule and allowing 2.92 per game. I love the Blues here and I’ll back them hard in this game for a unit and a half on the ML, a unit on the TT over 3 and a half unit on the puck line.
Canucks vs. Stars (10:00)
The Stars under trend ended in their last two games but its still hitting at a great clip on the season and it’s 8-2 on the under 5.5. The Stars offense is abysmal, ranked third last in the NHL, averaging 2.1 goals per game. Vancouver’s offense isn’t much better, ranked fifth last in the league, averaging 2.36 goals per game. Neither defense is too bad and they’re both in the top half of the league defensively. Neither team is averaging many shots either. I like the under trend to continue in this game and get back on track so I’ll take the under 5.5 for 1.5 units.
.5u Preds ML (-120)
1u Isles ML (-120)
1.5u Blues ML (-160)
.5u Blues -1.5 (+163)
1u Blues TT over 3 (-125)
1.5u Dallas/Vancouver under 5.5 (-120)
Record (Regular Season): 70-70-2 (-7.26 units)
