Nice bounce back day on yesterday’s NHL games, going 3-1 to win 1.46 units. Really solid week, let’s keep winning with tonight’s four game slate.
Sabres vs. Kraken (7:00)
Both of these teams suck. The Sabres are 8-10-3 and only have three wins in their last 14 games. Seattle blows too at 7-13-1 but come into this game with three wins in their last four games, all against good teams against the Caps, Hurricanes and Panthers. Neither team has been able to score much with the Sabres averaging 2.81 per game and the Kraken averaging 2.76. They’ve both been atrocious defensively. The Kraken have given up a fifth most 3.48 goals per game and the Sabres are just slightly better, giving up the sixth most at 3.33 per game. Earlier this month (11/4) in Seattle, the Kraken beat the Sabres 5-2 and I’ll back them to do it again tonight for half a unit.
Canadiens vs. Canucks (7:30)
Both of these teams have been atrocious this year too. So that’s two shitty games in a row on tonight’s slate. The Habs have been awful at 6-15-2 and today fired Marc Bergevin their GM. That kind of surprised me even with how bad Montreal is, but pretty short leash considering he just shocked the hockey world and took this team (on the back of Carey Price’s phenomenal play in goal) to the Stanley Cup Finals this past season. They come into this game giving up the second most goals in the NHL, an average of 3.61 per game and only scoring the fifth fewest, an average of 2.35 per game. This team’s pathetic. The Vancouver Canucks, coming into this game with four straight losses and only one win in their last ten games are just as pathetic at 6-14-2. They’re even worse than the Habs offensively, averaging just a fourth fewest 2.27 goals per game and allowing a sixth most 3.27 goals per game. I give Vancouver the slight edge here on goaltending alone since Thatcher Demko’s pretty solid between the pipes but I have no interest in betting this game at all.
Jets vs. Coyotes (7:30)
All the worst teams in the league are in action tonight with the 4-14-2 Arizona Coyotes, who surprisingly have three wins in their last six games, traveling to Winnipeg to face off against the Jets. Winnipeg comes into this game at 10-7-4 on a 4-2 win in Calgary on Saturday night that ended their five game losing streak. They’ve been very good at home, where they are 7-2-1. The Yotes have scored the fewest goals in the NHL, an average of 1.86 goals per game and they’ve allowed the third most goals in hockey, an average of 3.57 per game. Even though the Jets haven’t played well recently, they are still a decent team. They’re only scoring 2.67 goals per game (tenth fewest in the NHL) but they’re also only allowing that same 2.67 per game (seventh fewest in the NHL), which can be attributed to how good Connor Hellebuyck is. I really like the Jets in this spot at home against one of the worst teams in hockey. The moneyline is insanity at -330, but I will take the Jets in regulation for a unit. I also like the under here since I don’t expect the Yotes to score and the Jets haven’t score a whole lot themselves, so I will take that for a half unit as well.
Flames vs. Penguins (9:00)
These two teams have been two of the best in hockey as of late and despite them both dropping their games on Saturday night (Penguins lost 6-3 to Montreal and Flames lost 4-2 to Winnipeg), they were both on winning streaks of five (Pittsburgh) and four (Calgary) coming into those game. Pittsburgh is 10-7-4 on the year and now that they are healthy, they’ve been very good recently. On the season, they’re averaging 2.9 goals per game and allowing a seventh fewest 2.67 goals per game. Tristan Jarry’s been awesome with three shutouts in his last five starts. Impressive. Calgary’s been very good too. They come into this game 12-4-5, averaging a seventh most 3.33 goals per game and on Jacob Markstrom’s awesome play in goal, they’re allowing the fewest goals in the NHL, an average of only 2 per game. I’d give the slight edge to Calgary at home here but this should be a great game (and by far the best on this shitty slate) that I don’t see any value on betting in any direction.
