Yesterday had plenty of swings on the NHL and including my first live bet of the season (-0.57 units), I ended up going 6-6, losing a little less than a unit (-0.94). No big deal. Let’s bounce back with a winning day today!
Blues vs. Stars (2:00)
On Friday night, the Blues crushed the Capitals 5-1 for their third win in four games coming out of the Christmas break. St. Louis is 20-10-5, averaging 3.49 goals per game, fourth most in the NHL while allowing 2.71 goals per game on average, eleventh fewest in the NHL. Dallas comes into this game on a four game winning streak after coming back with two goals in the last five minutes of the game to beat Pittsburgh 3-2 yesterday, ending the Penguins winning streak after ten game (which lost me two bets to start my day). The Stars are 17-12-2 but haven’t fared well on the road, with a 4-9-1 record outside of Dallas. They’re averaging 2.87 goals per game and allowing an average of 2.94 per game. This will be the fourth and final meeting this season between these two teams. The first three all were 4-1 games, with Dallas winning the first one and the Blues winning the other two. With the Stars on the second half of the back to back, I like the Blues to win this one and will take them for 2 units.
Ducks vs. Red Wings (8:00)
Both of these teams played last night and are coming off losses. The Ducks are a decent team at 18-12-7 but dealing with a bunch of injuries they only have one win in their last six games after losing 4-1 at home to the Rangers last night. They’re averaging 2.97 goals per game and allowing the tenth fewest goals in the league, an average of 2.7 goals per game. That can be attributed to John Gibson’s good play in goal but with him currently out of the lineup and backup Anthony Stolarz playing last night, the Ducks will probably have to go with their prospect, Lukas Dostal making his NHL debut. The Red Wings got shut out in LA last night, losing 4-0 to the Kings for their third loss in their last four games since coming back from Christmas break. Detroit’s 16-16-3 but have been terrible on the road, with a 4-11-1 record. They’re averaging a tenth fewest 2.71 goals per game and allowing a ninth most 3.37 goals per game. They’re likely going with backup Thomas Greiss tonight in goal, who hasn’t been great, with a 3.41 GAA and .895 save percentage. I’d slightly lean the Ducks here but with the goaltending for both teams, my play on this game is half a unit on the over. Both team have trended under but I expect both goalies to give up a handful of goals to get over the 5.5.
