Yesterday didn’t go great, with some shocking results in the NHL. I went 3-5 losing 7.18 units. Let’s bounce back with a big winning day with this three game slate.
Devils vs. Coyotes (7:00)
For being one of the two worst teams in the NHL, the Arizona Coyotes have actually played decent hockey as of late. Coming off a 5-2 win against Montreal, they have a 3-2-1 record in their last six games. Not atrocious for a team that’s 9-24-4 on the season. They are still awful on the stat sheets averaging 2.22 goals per game, second fewest behind Montreal for worst in the NHL and allowing the most goals in the league, an average of 3.68 goals per game. The Devils haven’t been great this season at 14-18-5 but they’ve been decent since the Christmas break with a 4-3 record. They’re not a whole lot better than the Yotes, averaging 2.86 goals per game and allowing an average of 3.38 goals per game. I don’t see Arizona winning back to back games here on the road against the Devils. I’ll go with a unit on the Devils in regulation since I’m not laying the -200 on them and will parlay the ML for a unit with the Avs ML along with half a unit on a parlay of the two regulation lines. I’d slightly lean the under, but not enough to bet it with two bad defenses for teams that have over exceeded my expectations lately.
Rangers vs. Maple Leafs (7:30)
I’m expecting a great goaltending battle in this game between two likely Vezina candidates of Jack Campbell vs. Igor Shesterkin on two very good teams. The Leafs are 24-9-3 and the Rangers are 25-10-4. The Rangers have allowed the second fewest goals in the NHL (only behind Carolina), allowing just 2.44 goals per game. Toronto isn’t far behind them in that category, allowing a fifth fewest 2.56 goals per game. The bigger difference though that swings the Leafs way is offense. They’re averaging a seventh most 3.39 goals per game while the Rangers are only mustering up an average of 2.85 per game. Both times these teams met earlier this season in Toronto were 2-1 games, with the Rangers winning in overtime on October 18th and the Leafs winning 2-1 to get their recent on November 18th. I’d predict this one to be another slow grind of a defensive game and this game screams under to me. I still like the 5.5 but I’ll take the push insurance with the alternate under 6 for 1.5 units. I think the Maple Leafs are the better team here but its tough to bet against Shesterkin at home in MSG, so I’ll lay off a side here. I’d lean the Leafs but actually think there’s value on the Rangers.
Ducks vs. Avalanche (10:00)
The Avs are the hottest offense in the NHL, leading the league with an average of 4.25 goals per game. That gives them a 25-8-3 record on the season, with only one loss in their last nine games. They haven’t been great defensively or in goal though, giving up an average of 3.19 goals per game, twelfth most in the NHL. But with that kind of offense, that doesn’t matter. The Ducks, after their hot start to the season seem to be crumbling with injuries. They’re now 19-15-7 with just two wins in their last ten games. They’ve been pretty much league average on both ends of the ice, both scoring and allowing an average of 2.85 goals per game. After a 5-2 win on November 24th and 4-2 win on January 2nd for the Avs on home ice against the Ducks, I think they end up sweeping them on the season in Anaheim tonight. Along with my two parlays that hopefully will still be alive with a Devils win once this game comes, I’ll go with another half unit on the Avs in regulation on their own and 1.5 units on the Avs TT over 3.5. I’d lean the over too but not enough to bet it at 6.5 so I’ll just ride the TT on this one.
