Great bounce back night on the NHL yesterday, going 10-3 and winning 6.85 units! Crushed the board. Tonight we just have a four game slate to build on yesterday’s wins.
Stars vs. Jets (8:30)
The Jets are coming off a 2-0 shutout win against Minnesota coming out of the All Star game on Tuesday (which screwed me big time) and they’re now 19-17-7 on the season. Prior to the All Star break, they were playing bad hockey, with only one win in their last eight games. The Jets are averaging only 2.74 goals per game, eleventh fewest in the NHL but have been decent defensively, allowing an average of 2.84 goals per game. Dallas is coming off a 4-3 win against Nashville on Wednesday and have six wins in their last eight games. They’re 24-18-2 on the season and have been great at home, where they have a 16-6-1 record. The Stars are averaging 2.98 goals per game and allowing an average of 3.02 goals per game. The Jets won 4-3 in the first matchup between these teams this season in a shootout in Winnipeg on November 2nd. I like the Stars to answer back here and I’ll take them for a unit. I’d lean the over as well but not enough to bet it.
Oilers vs. Islanders (9:00)
The Oilers are a mess of a franchise and they just fired head coach Dave Tippett yesterday. I don’t think Tipp was the entire problem there and this team has a lot of shit that they still have to address but its a start. The way this team is assembled with no depth behind McDavid and Draisaitl, no defense and garbage goaltending, they will never win a Stanley Cup. Edmonton’s 23-18-3 and after their 4-1 embarrassing loss to Chicago on Wednesday night, they only have one win in their last four games and just seven wins in their last 23 games. On the season, they’re scoring an average of 3.18 goals per game, twelfth most in the NHL but most of that goal scoring is only coming from their two studs. The Isles are coming off a 6-3 win in Vancouver on Wednesday night where they scored 5 goals on their first 12 shots in the first period and then just cruised (at least I didn’t have to sweat out that under, was over before it started). They’re 17-17-6 and although they’re terrible offensively, averaging only 2.45 goals per game, fourth fewest in the NHL, they’ve been very good defensively, allowing just a fifth fewest average of 2.63 goals per game. The first time these teams played on Long Island on New Years Day, the Isles won 3-2 in an OT game that the Oilers gagged away (pretty sure I lost on that game). I don’t trust the Oilers and with the coaching change I think the best move is staying off this game. I’d slightly lean the Islanders and the under.
Coyotes vs. Lightning (9:30)
Last night the Lightning came a goal short (as did my over on that game), losing 3-2 in Colorado. The Bolts are a great team that could potentially three-peat and win the Cup again this year. They’re 30-11-6, averaging 3.34 goals per game, seventh most in the NHL and allowing a tenth fewest 2.75 goals per game. With Vasilevskiy starting in last night’s game, that likely leaves Brian Elliot getting the start in goal. The Yotes are coming off a 5-2 win in Seattle on Wednesday night (glad I stayed off that game), but they’re one of the worst teams in the NHL at 12-31-4 and a potential lottery team. They’re scoring only 2.21 goals per game, the second fewest average in the NHL while allowing a third most 3.66 goals per game. The first time these teams played in Tampa this season on October 28th, the Bolts rolled through them as expected with a 5-1 win. Even with Elliot probably starting, I like the Lightning a lot here. I’m not laying the -320, but I’ll take the Bolts in regulation for a unit and the Bolts TT over 3.5 for 2 units.
Ducks vs. Kraken (10:00)
The Kraken suck. They’re 15-28-4 and coming off a 5-2 loss at home to Arizona on Wednesday. They’re scoring an average of 2.6 goals per game, eighth fewest in the NHL and allowing the sixth most goals in hockey, an average of 3.47 per game. The Ducks are 23-16-9 and playing better hockey lately, with a 4-0-2 record in their last six games. They’re averaging only 2.88 goals per game, but have been very good on the back end, allowing a twelfth fewest average of 2.77 goals per game. The Ducks won both of the first two matchups between these Pacific Division “rivals” pretty easily with a 7-4 win on November 11th and a 4-1 win on December 15th. I’d think Anaheim sweeps the Kraken on the season with a win tonight. I’ll take the Ducks for a unit, the puck line for half a unit and 0.2 units on the -2.5 alternate puck line.
1u Stars ML (-124)
1u Lightning in regulation (-180)
2u Lightning TT over 3.5 (-159)
1u Ducks ML (-157)
.5u Ducks -1.5 (+160)
.2u Ducks -2.5 (+295)
Record: 410-287-16 (+18.6 units)
