The west coast road trip continued tonight for the Sabres in Calgary to face off against the undefeated 3-0 Flames. An absolutely beautiful and unexpected 6-3 victory for Buffalo!!
The Flames opened the scoring 4:21 into the first period as Andrew Mangiapane scored on Comrie after a defensive breakdown for the Sabres where they looked lost in their own zone. The Sabres didn’t take long to tie it up with Dylan Cozens crashed the net just 2:13 later for his first goal of the season. At 10:49 in the first, Rasmus Dahlin continued his goal per game streak to give the Sabres a 2-1 lead, breaking an NHL record for the longest season opening goal streak by a defenseman. Casey Mittelstadt got past the Flames defense and scored for the Buffalo, giving us a 3-1 lead with 6:50 left in the first. Really solid start for the Sabres in tonight’s game really putting a ton of pressure on Calgary which was rewarded with an early 3-1 lead. No complaints about that!
To start off the second period the Sabres made it 4-1 on a beautiful shot by Alex Tuch through traffic just 46 seconds in, chasing Vezina finalist from a season ago Jacob Markstrom out of the net. A fun second period as the Sabres poured on the offense including hitting 3 posts and a highlight reel save by Tage Thompson on a puck that got past Eric Comrie. The Flames made it a two goal game again with just 1.6 seconds left in the second period off an unlucky bounce of the puck off the ref’s skate into a prime area in front of the net. Bad break for the Sabres on that one.
Early in the third period, 1:10 into the period, the former Sabre Nikita Zadorov made it a one goal game again getting on five hole on a screened Eric Comrie, who never saw the puck. Tuch answered back with his second of the night on the power play on an absolutely GORGEOUS play on a pass from Tage Thompson 5:41 into the period. The net was empty already with four and a half minutes left in the game but after the Flames took an interference call to save a breakaway empty net goal, Dan Vladar was back in the goal. Calgary killed it off but that didn’t matter as Alex Tuch capped off the game with an empty net goal for his hat trick to put the Sabres up 6-3 with 1:25 remaining. Comrie was great in goal again, making 40 saves tonight.
FINAL: Sabres 6, Flames 3
Absolutely incredible win for the boys in Calgary tonight, giving the Flames their first loss of the season. This team’s fucking good and this city’s gonna be a problem…Bills Super Bowl, Sabres in the playoffs.
