Sabres @ Avalanche: 12/15/22 – Game Reactions/Recap

Following a huge 6-0 third period win against the Kings on Tuesday, tonight the Sabres were in Colorado to face the defending Cup Champs for the second time this season and got a great 4-2 win. That was our first win in the last nine games against the Avs and answered back from the 6-4 loss at home a few weeks ago (which I attended).

Coming into tonight, the Avs were without a lot of key players, out with injury. The most significant, Nathan MacKinnon. The Sabres weren’t completely healthy either though and only were able to have five defensemen dressed tonight since Owen Power had a lower body “tweak” in warm ups and was ruled out of the game.

The Sabres opened the scoring very early with Tage getting the puck right in front, deking Georgiev a few times and putting it past him easily to put Buffalo up 1-0 just 54 seconds into the game. 7:08 into the period, the Sabres made it 2-0 as with some great work and a couple nice moves, Alex Tuch scored. UPL made a lot of really good saves to keep the game at 2-0 after a period.

The second period started off pretty boring but with just 2:49 left in the period, Dahlin got the puck from Tyson Jost right in the center lane and sent a rocket of a shot home to give the Sabres a 3-0 lead going into the second intermission.

It took until 11:40 left in the third period for the Avalanche to break UPL’s shutout on their 32nd shot of the game with Mikko Rantanen scoring on a two on one off a quick pass from Valeri Nichushkin. With the net empty, the Avs made it a close game with 1:22 left as former Sabres Evan Rodrigues collected a rebound and put it past Luukkonen to make it 3-2. The Sabres answered back with 57.1 seconds left on a Dylan Cozens empty net goal and we went on to win 4-2. Not a great third period but a great win.

Final: Sabres 4, Avalanche 2

Really good game for the Sabres. We got the lead early thanks to Tage and Tuchy’s goals and the shorthanded defense for the Sabres stepped up in front of a fantastic 39 save performance with a .951 save percentage from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Buffalo got outshot 41-21 tonight but that didn’t matter with us doubling up on the goals.

Solid team win.

Let’s Go Sabres!
