I broke even last night on the NHL, going 4-2 to win 0.02 units. Technically my sixth winning night in the last week. Tonight we have a big eleven game slate. Let’s keep winning.
Penguins vs. Panthers (7:00)
This should be a pretty fun game. I broke it down in depth with my article on StatSalt. As I said in the article, I like the Pens to win and the over, which I will take for half a unit each.
Red Wings vs. Sharks (7:00)
I have almost no interest in this game. Neither team has played well this season. The Red Wings are 19-18-8 on the season and coming off a 2-1 loss at home to the Flyers on Saturday, they’ve only won one of their last five games. They’ve struggled a bit on both ends of the ice. The Sharks are even worse at 14-25-9. They’re coming off a 4-0 shutout loss in Boston (double winner for me) on Sunday and have only one win in their last six games. They’ve struggled big time on both ends of the ice, even more so than Detroit has, especially defensively. In San Jose on November 17th for the first game between these teams, the Red Wings won 7-4. I’d expect they win again here at home but not enough to bet on it. I do like the over though which I’ll take for half a unit.
Canadiens vs. Bruins (7:00)
This is a huge mismatch between the two teams on opposite ends of the Atlantic Division standings. The Bruins are off to a historcial start to their season, and not only are they the best team in the NHL this season, this could be the best team in NHL regular season history. They’re 37-5-4 on the season and are on a five game win streak, coming off a 4-0 shutout win at home against the Sharks on Sunday. Boston’s the best team in the NHL on both ends of the ice. The Habs are 20-24-3 on the season. They’ve played well lately though with three impressive wins in their last four games, coming off a 3-2 overtime win at home against the Leafs on Saturday. Montreal’s struggled on both ends of the ice. The Bruins should obviously win this game but the prices on this game for the moneyline and regulation line are way too high to bet on. I’ll still get in on the action here though with half a unit each on the B’s puck line and the B’s team total over 3.5.
Flyers vs. Kings (7:00)
This is actually a pretty interesting matchup even though it doesn’t look great on paper. The Flyers are 20-21-7 on the season and have played their best hockey recently with nine wins in their last 13 games. They’re coming off a 5-3 loss to the Jets on Sunday evening. Statistically they’ve been horrible offensively but haven’t been as bad on the back end. The Kings ended a three game losing streak with a 2-1 win in Chicago on Sunday. and are in third place in the Pacific, with a 26-17-6 record. Offensively LA has been good all season but they’ve struggled defensively, which has gotten better for them lately. In the first game between these teams on December 31st in LA, Philly pulled off the win on the road. I’d lean the Kings answer back with a road win here and would slgihtly lean the under, but not enough to bet either in this one. I’ll stay off this game entirely.
Lightning vs. Wild (7:00)
This is an awesome cross-conference matchup between two good playoff teams. The Lightning are 29-15-1 on the season but have lost their last two games in Albert, losing 6-3 in Calgary on Saturday and 5-3 in Edmonton on Thursday. Tampa’s offense has been fantasic and although their defense hasn’t been quite up to par as the last few years, they’re still very good on the back end. The Wild have lost their last two games as well, coming off a 5-3 loss on the road to the Panthers on Saturday. Minnesota’s played well on both ends of the ice this season. In the first game between these teams earlier this month on January 4th, I had high hopes for it to be a fun game but the Wild ended up just winning a 5-1 blowout at home. I feel like this is a coin flip game. I’d lean the Lightning win here at home but not enough to bet it at -175. I do like the over though, which I will take for half a unit.
Devils vs. Golden Knights (7:30)
This game matches up two teams that I have futures on to win the Cup (but don’t see either team actually doing so, hedge equity). The Devils have been great this year and they’re back to their great winning ways that they started the season with. On Sunday they got a 2-1 overtime win against the Penguins to improve to 30-12-4 on the season, going 6-0-1 in their last seven games. New Jersey’s been great on both ends of the ice. The Golden Knights are in quite a slump and although they still lead the Pacific Division with a 29-17-2 record, they’ve only won one game in their last five games. They’ve been good on both ends of the ice, but not quite as good on either as Jersey has been. I’d lean the Devils get a win here and the over but not enough to bet on either. I’ll stay off this game completely.
Predators vs. Jets (8:00)
I don’t understand all the disrespect the books have given the Jets this year but they continue to roll, making them an awesome bet on a consistent basis. Winnipeg is just a point behind Dallas and can move to first place in the Western Conference with a win tonight. They’re 31-16-1 on the season and are coming off a 5-3 win in Philly on Sunday (easy double winner for me). They’ve played well on both ends of the ice, especially defensively with Connor Hellebuyck between the pipes, one of the best goalies in the game. The Predators are playing well right now with three wins in their last four games, coming off a 5-3 win at home against the Kings on Saturday. They’re 22-18-6 on the season. Although they’ve struggled offensively, they’ve been good defensively. Winnipeg needed overtime but got a 2-1 win in the first game between these teams on December 15th at home. I’ll take the Jets to get another win on the road in Smashville tonight in this Central Division matchup for a unit. I’d lean the under, but not enough to bet it.
Blues vs. Sabres (8:00)
Last night the Sabres started off slow and sloppy but they made their adjustments for a very competitive game and we got our third straight win on Owen Power’s game winner in Dallas, beating the Stars 3-2. That win improves us to 24-19-3 on the season as the first team currently out of a wild card spot. We have the second best offense in the NHL but we’ve struggled quite a bit defensively. The Blues have been very inconsistent this season and coming off a 5-3 loss at home to the Blackhawks on Saturday to drop to 23-21-3 on the season. Their offense has been alright but their defense and goaltending has sucked. The Sabres won the first game between these teams 6-2 in Buffalo on November 23rd. I like my Sabres to get another win on the road here and will take them for half a unit. Additionally, I really like the over, which I will take for a unit.
Coyotes vs. Ducks (9:00)
I broke down this game between two of worst teams in the NHL in depth with an article on StatSalt. I like the Yotes to win at home here and will take them for half a unit.
Avalanche vs. Capitals (9:00)
This should be really fun cross conference game tonight. I broke it down in depth with my article on StatSalt. I like the Avs to win at home, which I’ll take for half a unit. Additionally, I really like the under which I will take for a unit.
Canucks vs. Blackhawks (10:00)
What the Canucks ownership did the last few months to Bruce Boudreau was the worst shit I’ve ever seen come down from the top of an NHL organization. After several weeks of knowing he was on his way out, Vancouver finally fired him and replaced him with new head coach Rick Tocchet. They suck with all the energy drained out of that team. They have an 18-25-3 record on the season and are on a three game losing streak with only one win in their last eight games, coming off a 4-2 loss at home to the Oilers on Saturday night. Vancouver’s offense has been pretty good this season but their defense and goaltending has be awful. The Blackhawks are one of the worst teams in the NHL with a 14-27-4 record. They have played well lately though with six wins in their last eight games, coming off a 2-1 loss to the Kings at home on Sunday. Chicago’s been terrible on both ends of the ice this year. I’d slightly lean the Canucks win here but no way I bet it with the way these seasons are going for these teams. I like the over though and I’ll take the alternate over 6 for half a unit.
