Sabres vs. Hurricanes: 2/1/23 – Game Reactions/Recap

The Sabres came into tonight’s game, picking up at least a point in each of their last seven games with a very tough matchup against the Canes. Carolina’s been fantastic so this was a tough game and we looked like complete shit, losing 5-1 to go into the All Star break.

The Canes did a good job moving the puck on the power play with Tage Thompson in the box for hooking and just 2:35 into the game, Sebastian Aho got the tip in from Teuvo Teravainen, extending Aho’s goal streak to six straight games, tying his career record and putting Carolina on the baord first. With fantastic patience for Marty Necas, on a two on one, the Canes made it 2-0 with 9:55 left in the first as he held the puck till the perfect time, passing it over to Stefan Noesen who put it in the back of the net on a goal that UPL didn’t even stand a chance to stop. Brent Burns made it 3-0 with 7:13 left in the first, with some more beautiful passing through piss poor defense. The Sabres finally got on the board with Alex Tuch putting one past Anti Raanta on a beautiful wrist shot from above the circle to make it 3-1 and put Buffalo back into the game.

We got outplayed again in the second period but it stayed scoreless with us going into the third period still down 3-1.

The Sabres started the third period hot, getting some decent scoring chances but it was Carolina that scored first in the peirod, with the Sabres turning over the puck leading to a beautiful pass and Derek Stepan getting left all alone right in front of the net with again horrible defense by the Sabres and scoring on Luukkonen to make it 4-1 Carolina. Jordan Martinook iced off the game that we never stood a chance in with an empty net goal with 1:41 left in the game.

Final: Sabres 1, Hurricanes 5

We looked like fucking shit tonight, on both ends of the ice and got completely dominated by Carolina. We looked brutal, taking our first regulation loss in our last eight games. Nine days off with the All Star break and an extra week off. Come back fresh with hopefully a healthy Tage Thompson who left tonight’s game with injury.

Go Sabres.
